Actor Val Kilmer apologizes for insulting Vets, New Mexico residents (Partial apology anyway)
American Thinker ^ | 06/24/2010 | David Paulin

Hollywood actor Val Kilmer on Wednesday gave a partial apology to New Mexico residents who were outraged that he'd reportedly called them drunks and also disparaged Vietnam veterans. Among the magazines that allegedly misquoted the actor were Rolling Stone and Esquire. In a bizarre moment at the public hearing where Kilmer spoke, a Hispanic man suggested the actor was a racist businessman.

Kilmer, wearing a prominent pony tail, got the permits he was seeking from county commissioners to turn his sprawling ranch outside Santa Fe into an upscale bed-and-breakfast. But resident Abran Tapia -- who together with other residents had opposed the permits because of Kilmer's alleged insults -- was not satisfied with what one local TV station called Kilmer's "partial apology."

"It's the biggest piece of crap that I've ever heard, Tapia said of Kilmer, who has put on considerable weight since the height of his Hollywood days.

Tapia, rising another concern, also complained that Kilmer's bed-and-breakfast would be "racist" because Hispanics couldn't afford to stay there, according to one news report. It was a puzzling remark, to be sure -- one that no doubt caught Kilmer off guard. No matter that it reflects a common sentiment among deep-thinking Hollywood liberals, members of ACORN, and perhaps even President Obama and his friends in Washington and Chicago.

Watched the local news on that last night. They showed one guy berating Kilmer. Then the guy doing the berating called Kilmer a Gringo. Didn’t help his case much. Kilmer’s a jerk, to be sure, but calling someone a Gringo while chastising them for berating you doesn’t do much for me on the give-a-damn meter.

Yep, and additionally, Hispanic is a language group, not a race.

Really, outside of Top Secret (which I believe was his first movie and just a silly spoof) and playing Doc Holliday in Tombstone, I can't think of any other of his roles worth remembering.

While Kilmer is creepy in his reaction, the BIG point is that the government is at fault here. Not him.

Agreed. This is the USA. Insulting your neighbors and veterans is not against the law.

Why should anyone have to grovel and apologize just to get government permission to use their property as they see fit?

Didn't he have an affair with Cher once?

Wow...maybe Chaz Bono really is his daughter/son. He/she looks a lot more like Kilmer than Sonny.

My personal favorite Val Kilmer role was his portrayal of Doc Holiday in the movie — TOMBSTONE. That acting was a tour de force. He should have gotten an Oscar for that role.

His lines in that film still has a cult following.

How about his portrayal of Jim Morrison in THE DOORS ?

This reminds me of the commentary and side-by-side pics of Delta Burke, only then we found out she had been using speed and other drugs to maintain what people considered “better form”, got off it and found a better, healthier, albeit *bigger* life.

“Why should anyone have to grovel and apologize just to get government permission to use their property as they see fit?”

The county attorney for that county, actually openly stated that he would not approve his permit to build some cabins on his ranch unless Kilmer apologized for saying insulting hispanics. The local ACLU started a lawsuit.

The idiot actually said he would deny a permit to a guy for saying something disparaging about hipanic culture.
Amazing,,,

I recently read somewhere that all the main stars in Top Gun got rides in F-14s. Every single one barfed except for Anthony Edwards,,”Goose”.

“What business is it of theirs what he does with his own property?”

EXACTLY! As much as I hate this idiot Kilmer (or at least his statements and a good portion of his movies), the fact that you have to beg the locals to let you use your own property is complete lunacy!

One of the reasons Houston is such a prosperous city is because they do not limit property use. There are no zoning requirements, etc... Of course, each is required to maintain a SAFE business, etc... but if I want to turn my house into a Bed & Breakfast, I do not have to ask permission; I only have to get the proper inspections to ensure I can safely operate my business!

It now appears that there is a good chance that Kilmer is right about his neighbors.

Just sayin'.
