Three rifle volleys echoed through the Hills Tuesday afternoon, bidding farewell to the nation’s last Oglala Lakota code talker.

Clarence Wolf Guts, an 86-year-old World War II veteran, was laid to rest in the Black Hills National Cemetery with the Lord’s Prayer and drum beat resonating inside the rock rotunda.

A procession of 30 vehicles -- including one white Chevy Impala with the sign “We love you Grandpa Clarence, forever in our heart.” -- followed a white van that carried Wolf Guts from a traditional Lakota ceremony in Wanblee to Sturgis. A crowd of over 60 traveled to pay their respects to the war hero.

RIP.

I've heard that his brother, Sue Wolf Guts, was not a man to be crossed.

RIP Clarence.

Never heard of Lakota code talkers in the Army. Time for a little historical research.

Interesting that Wikipedia does not seem to find it necessary to honor the sacrifices of the Lakota in WW II. Their entry:
"The name code talkers is strongly associated with bilingual Navajo speakers specially recruited during World War II by the Marines to serve in their standard communications units in the Pacific Theater. Code talking, however, was pioneered by Choctaw Indians serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. These soldiers are referred to as Choctaw Code Talkers.

"Other Native American code talkers were used by the United States Army during World War II, using Cherokee, Choctaw and Comanche soldiers. Soldiers of Basque ancestry were used for code talking by the US Marines during World War II in areas where other Basque speakers were not expected to be operating."
In fact, the only hits I could find online for either Ogala, Lakota, or Dakota code talkers were for this hero's funeral.

On the Code Talkers own website, I found a petition to congress for recognition of other code talkers:
"It is estimated that at least 18 tribes have contributed Code Talkers to both world wars. These include Cheyenne, Comanche, Cherokee, Choctaw, Osage, and Yankton Sioux in WWI, and in WWII, Chippewa, Choctaw, Comanche, Creek, Hopi, Kiowa, Menominee, Muscogee-Seminole, Navajo, Oneida, Pawnee, Sac and Fox (Meskwaki) and Sioux (both Lakota and Dakota dialects). There may be others - this still needs to be fully investigated."

The Code Talkers were one of the most innovative ideas this country has ever had.

The Japanese could not break the codes at all.

This entire part of the USA history is really what America is all about.

We are a can do group-—& we do not need NObama telling us everything we should/could do, nor do we need NObama controlling every part of our economy.

You are in for a real uplifting and wonderful revelation about America and Americans.

Here is what is important about these guys… because let’s face, it all men in uniform served in some way...

THESE guys were from a group of Americans who had positively NOTHING to be grateful for from mainstream America OR the US government.

Native Americans had never once got a fair shake from the US government or military … and THIS while being robbed and defrauded out of the rightful possession of their homes, property and human dignity.

When the call came in the second war, these guys STILL called themselves Americans!!!!!!!!! They stepped up to the plate, at great personal risk and with NO guarantee of preferential treatment for their trouble … they served honorably and quietly went home when it was over.

THIS is what I respect most about them, that AMERICA meant something to them and that something was worth their honor and the risk to their personal well-being. That America, even at its very worst, was worth fighting and dying for.

If you want to know why I hate Liberals SO much it is because none of them endured the oppression, inhumanity and privation Native Americans have.. and yet Liberals hate and shame America at every opportunity…Liberals even evaded military service in MY personal memory.

I spit on the Liberals’ lack of respect for this country!

The US Army started using Indian code talkers in WWI, and continued using them in WWII.

The army just doesn’t constantly work at publicity.

Thanks for that post. I knew about the codetalkers, but somehow I thought that they were all Navajo. It’s interesting to see how many tribes were really involved.

The coolest Indian name I ever ran across was Pius Whirlwind Soldier, a Sioux.

Wolf Guts. You gotta luv a name like that. It reminds of a joke I heard. A young indian brave went to his father and asked how his name had been chosen. His father said, “I chose my children’s names from the first thing I see after they were born. What troubles you, Two Dogs F*cking?”

Same here, I knew about the Navajo code talkers, but not the Lakota.

May he find in death the peace he sought in life.
