A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.
The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Natos Training Mission in Afghanistan.

I hope McCrystal comes out publicly and denounces Moogly
Just having ANYTHING to do with Rolling Stone, and actually blabbing off to them while he is in command PROVES he is not the brightest bulb.
Rule #1 in the military is that you don't blab your mouth off about the president or his administration in public. He should have known better.
Yeah, I wouldn’t pick Caldwell if it were up to me.
I just put on my Obama ears and heard...Caldwell..Caldwell.
Harvard is the bling that will catch Obama’s eye.
My feeling is that McC knew what he was doing and saying. He knew he was in a total no-win situation, that failure would be hung around his neck and that his career was at an end at this point. Knowing this situation would lead to resignation, I think he wanted to get his message out before going. It’s not the traditional military way to go, but a lot of traditional things have been thrown to the side with this regime.
The Rolling Stone article is rather thorough:
"He carries a custom made set of nunchucks in his convoy engraved with his name and four stars ...."
What was Paton's personal weapon of choice?
yitbos
I was talking about Caldwell, who was mostly a staff officer and has been talked about to replace McChrystal. McChrystal had super star career with multiple command tours at all levels which is why he got selected in the first place.
