These guys are gurkhas and that's a kikri. I doubt they are from north of our border. The only Gurkha regiments left are in Great Britan, Bruni and maybe India.

They are indeed Gurkhas [or Ghorkas] and their traditional Nepalese fighting knife is known as the Kukri or Khukuri. I've carried and used one since I first worked with one of their border detatchments serving with the British Army of the Rhine along the East German *Iron Curtain* 5 km zone on the Federal Republic of Germany side. My last time out bush with them was in Belize in 2002, and they paid me the very nice compliment of letting me tag along on a couple of patrols with them.

They served as the security force for the CPA *Green Zone* in Baghdad, as well as the household bodyguards for the Sultan of Brunei and the The Emir of Kuwait, as well as in a few other hot spots, notably Hong Knog.

The British Gurkha Regiment is no longer a cohesive regimental unit, downsized as many British Army units have been into the Brigade of Gurkhas, but 3,640 Gurkhas still soldier on in Her Majesty's service, current OrBat and postimngs including:

HQ, Brigade of Gurkhas, based in Aldershot
British Gurkhas, Nepal
1st and 2nd Battalions, The Royal Gurkha Rifles
The Queen's Gurkha Engineers
The Queen's Gurkha Signals, based in York, Bramcote, Blandford and Stafford.
There are additional Troop locations in Nepal and Brunei.
The Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment
The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas (including some damn fine bagpipers!

As for Gurkhas north of our border: if you're ever up around Medicine Hat in Alberta, do have a little visit at the British Army Training Unit Suffield located near there. Though the Gurkhas have dreat sport passing themselves off as local Yupik or Inupiat Indians. Look for the big grins on their faces, and give them a cheery Ayo Ghorkhali!
