You guys all make a good point- if he resigned first would we be talking about it? Maybe- maybe not. But then why apologize?
Still- the example this sets for the enlisted man and the officer corps is very poor. The civilian world does not operate the same way as the military- what he’s done is a serious violation. It’s about a principle- and a RULE, regardless of the personalities involved.

Don’t think I see any disagreement...you are right. I think he wanted to make sure it got dragged out...Ali being banged into the ropes for several rounds made him look weak too...until the rope a dope strategy unfolded. I think this is going to be covered in a way that NEVER would have happened otherwise. I also think that the theory of discipline and chain of command is important, but this is not a real blow to that policy...IMHO...the troops will see it for what it is.
Because he got what he wanted so he doesn't mind losing a little face now. He got some sharp points made and he got some face time with Obama.
The point was made so sharply that Obama won't give him just a photo op this time...theu'll have a real sit-down which is likely what McCrystal was after. The WH will take him more seriously from this point on. If McCrystal doesn't get some of the stuff he's after (one of the them likely being a walking-back on the July withdrawal deadline) I wouldn't be suprised if he put his resignation on the table.
