Report: Insubordinate McChrystal Called Back to Washington for White House Meeting
Tuesday, June 22, 2010 | Kristinn

Posted on 06/22/2010 4:07:18 AM PDT by kristinn

NBC News' Savannah Guthrie reports this morning that Gen. Stanley McChrystal is being called to Washington for a meeting at the White House tomorrow in the wake of a Rolling Stone article that has exposed McChrystal and his staff as mockingly disrespectful of their civilian overseers, including their commander-in-chief President Barack Obama.

Guthrie posted at Twitter:

McChrystal has been ordered to the Sit Rom tomorrow to explain his stmts criticizing admin officials to Rolling Stone to POTUS in person 15 minutes ago via UberTwitter

Guthrie added: "McChrystal has been calling around town apologizing to officials."

The Atlantic reported late last night that McChrystal had been called by numerous top officials last night:

Within hours after today's Rolling Stone story broke, McChrystal was called by the White House, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. They were not happy.

The Atlantic also notes that McChrystal never completely had the trust of the Obama administration:

Even though McChrystal voted for Obama and told him so during their first meeting, he sensed that a number of senior White House aides didn't really believe that the former commander of the military's special missions unit during the Bush-Cheney years was suddenly on their side. National Security Adviser James Jones, who is a bit of cipher to McChrystal's team, may or may not have been one of these aides. No one in the West Wing bought all that liberal internet chatter about JSOC's alleged crimes -- but no one really didn't buy it, either.

” Precisely and absolutely correct, I’m surprised to read so many here who either don’t know this or don’t think it matters as much as it does. One may hold whatever opinion he cares to while in the military, however, he may not express it this way — you wanna spout off, you take your uniform off, as you say, you resign your commission first.”

.... with all due respect, this country has never been in this situation before accept once back in the 1860’s

"I’m still trying to work my mind around his voting for Obama..."

In the 21st Century is it possible for anyone to rise above the rank of Lt. Col. without being a skilled politician himself?

I doubt it.

Exactly. Any senior military man should have made it his business to educate himself about this candidate before voting. If Obama were just another run-of-the-mill Dem - I could forgive it easily. But given who and what he is- it throws all of McCrystal’s decisions into question.

It’s hard to respect him now.

” But....so to should Obama and his failed administration for giving green light permits to BP to move forward with a hazardous situation.”

That’s the story no one wants to really focus on.

It’s called root cause, most companies know to look for it and correct it. In politics its just “ not my fault” let’s talk about how wrong you are.

How could Obama be “unprepared” for a meeting on an issue he (supposedly) spent months studying to get it right?
Hmmm....let me think....

Working for an incompetent boss is hellish. I can only imagine that if that incompetent boss is also causing the unnecessary deaths of men and women, or at least risking that, the hell is much worse.

It’s a wonder McChrystal has lasted this long without letting things slip.

I missed that story. Do you have any links?

generals are supposed to be apolitical.

Eisenhower never voted. I read he was scrupulous about this.

That was the old Regular Army. But even in the Old Army that was more of an ideal than reality. Most of our early generals were political, throughout the 19th century. Both politicians appointed to as generals and generals who went into politics.

In the late 19th and into 20th century, the professional tradition -- including not voting -- developed, but applied primarily below the general officer level. Truly, successful general officers have to be political in one way or another (if not especially partisan). MacArthur was tremendously political (his mother was very well connected, and his father was a Civil War general and later governor of the Philippines), so were Pershing and Patton.

Growing up, I knew lots of professional officers who did not vote, but that hasn't been true since the last of the pre-Vietnam guys (commissions pre-1960) left service.

What Should Happen to Gen. McChrystal?

59% Nothing. He apologized for his “poor judgment.” He and the White House should just move on.
22% Not Sure, but this is probably not the time to be changing generals at such a critical time in Afghanistan.
8% Fire him. He admitted to making inappropriate comments, and he should get the ax.

That’s all possible. Of course anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together realized from the get go that “commander zero’s” loyalties lie with his brother muslims, not the American Military and he has never had any intention of winning the afghan battle in the war against the mohammadens

The man is stupid. He should have known better than to be candid in front of a reporter, especially one from Rolling Stone. I’ve learned from experience that the words one LEAST wanted repeated will be in the lead paragraph of a reporter’s story.
