Panel Is Unlikely to End Deepwater Drilling Ban Early ( RE: Deepwater Horizon oilspill)

WASHINGTON — The bipartisan commission named by President Obama in May to study the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the future of American offshore drilling will hold its first formal meeting in mid-July at the earliest, most likely delaying the delivery of its final report into next year, a co-chairman of the panel said in an interview.

The co-chairman, William K. Reilly, who served as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under the first President Bush, also said it was unlikely that the panel would recommend the lifting of the six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling before it completes its report. Such a move would require profound changes in industry practice and government oversight that cannot be done that quickly, Mr. Reilly said in his first extensive remarks on the commission’s work.

The oil industry, its supporters in Congress and Gulf Coast officials have called for swiftly lifting the moratorium, saying the ban was causing severe economic hardship and that drilling could resume safely under tighter interim rules. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and some other administration officials had given the industry hope that the ban would be lifted as soon as new regulations were in place.

But Mr. Reilly said that ending the moratorium would require that the industry adopt safer drilling techniques and that the government regulatory agencies, particularly the Minerals Management Service, a part of the Interior Department, be markedly strengthened.

All About The Oil

In 1901 William Knox D'Arcy, a wealthy Englishman, went into the Iranian desert in search of oil. He finally discovered oil in 1908 and, one year later, founded the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. The company found itself in need of financing and, just before WWI, it found a backer in Winston Churchill, then the First Lord of the Admiralty. The British government acquired controlling interest in the company and guaranteed itself a secure supply of oil.

In 1914 British and German oil companies went into partnership with the Turkish Petroleum Company which owned the oil rights to all of Mesopotamia (Iraq, Eastern Syria, Southeastern Turkey, and Southwest Iran). The industrial powers of Europe, fast becoming dependent on oil for growth and lacking domestic supplies, soon took absolute control over the Middle-Eastern oil fields. When WWI broke out the Anglo-German partnership was ended and the German-allied Ottoman empire found it's territories open to British attack. As the war was coming to a close, and Britain looked to it's future, the supply of oil became crucial. Sir Maurice Hankey, Secretary to the War Cabinet wrote to Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour that, " Control of these oil supplies becomes a first class war aim". Shortly afterwards the British forces entered Baghdad.

The BP OIL SPILL

Introduction: As a long-time titan in Washington lobbying, BP is well positioned to repel federal scrutiny by using its political influence. The company spent nearly $16 million last year to influence Congress and the Executive branch and that rate of spending hasn’t slowed down this year. During the first quarter of 2010, it ranked second among all oil and gas interests racking up $3.53 million on federal lobbying. The top recipient of BP’s lobbying money in 2008 was President Barack Obama.

Now for the other characters in this play:

1. JOHN PODESTA: John Podesta heads up George Soros’ “Center For American Progress”, a very left wing pressure group. He is also a very close ally of President Obama. In fact, Podesta headed up Obama’s transition team when Obama took office. John Podesta is now rumored to be scripting the White House response to the BP spill. In other words, John Podesta, close personal ally of the President, is “the attack dog” who is running the show against BP.

2. TONY PODESTA: BUT – there is twist. John Podesta has a brother. His name is Tony Podesta. John and Tony together founded a top Washington LOBBYING FIRM called “The Podesta Group”.

Now we connect the dots:

3. “The Podesta Group” gave Obama more money in 2008 than it gave to any other politician!

4. TONY PODESTA is BP’s chief lobbyist in Washington and has the task of protecting BP’s interests in this oil-spill mess that his brother [and business partner] is orchestrating for the Administration. Tony lobbied the Congress and handed out BP’s money.

Question: Seeing the close relationship that exists between BP and the US Government, between BP and President Obama ($$$), between Tony Podesta and the Congress of the United States ($$$), between Tony Podesta and his brother JOHN who works for Obama and who is scripting this TV show etc. – just how much of what we are seeing can we believe?

Aren’t they all just too close for comfort? What’s going on here???
