Moms really shouldn’t date.

<><><><<>

More one size fits all thinking. My 2 stepchildren would not have had a male figure in their lives (and my wife no husband) these last 21 years if their mom had followed your advice. I’m glad she didn’t, and based on yesterday’s Father’s Day celebration, so are the kids.

I suspect that there are many more cases of moms with kids dating quite successfully than the cases oft cited here, but since success is not newsworthy in this context, one hears nothing about those cases.

I should clarify. My wife and I started seeing each other when her sons were 14 and 12. At first we only saw each other when her kids were with their dad, but as it began to look like it was going somewhere, it became more frequent. The older son had reservations about it, but the younger one loved me from the get go.

It worked out in our case, and obviously yours dmz.

But I would argue that, more often than not, it does not work out. A lot of kids watch their single moms become serial daters, with boyfriend after boyfriend, which has consequences. We hear about the dangerous ones.

While I’m glad that things worked out the way they did in my life, in hindsight I do think she and I were self indulging at the time. After two years of dating we decided that we needed to set a better example, and we married.

I had one of the best stepfathers that a young boy could hope for. His teachings (through how he lives) have taught me how to be a step-dad to my fiances’ daughter.

I shudder to think what I would have grown up to be like had that man NOT come into the lives of my brother and I, when he did NOT have to and showed us what real men are like, how to properly support your children and how to treat a lady right.

God Bless YOU and all step-parents out there who are doing RIGHT by their chosen families.

It;s a FACT......the most DANGEROUS place for a CHILD is in the home of a SINGLE PARENT!! Boyfriends and other males are responsible for a LOT of dead kids. Glad your situation worked out....you are one of the GOOD ones, but the evidence shows otherwise for a LOT of kids.

I was thinking the same thing. I know wonderful lady who went through hell with her first husband, second husband was a slacker, but this third marriage she has a wonderful husband who loves her and her children, plus has a few more in the mix that are his.

About 5 years ago, my daughter lost her 33 year old husband to a heart attack. I am glad she decided to start dating, now my 3 grand children by her have a step dad, who so far has proved to be an outstanding step-father.

A pat answer to every situation, is no answer at all.

I am glad to see someone speaking out on this. I was also a step-dad and the children were quite happy to have me, I was a vast improvement over the biological father. The wife has passed, as has one of the children, due to a car wreck, but neither her nor the kids were ever harmed by me.

Painting with a broad brush seems to be quite popular here sometimes.

Let me do a little broad brush painting myself and say I think the race of the people involved have more to do with this than any dating situation.
