California Wants To Put E-Ads On License Plates
Slashdot ^ | 6/21/10 | kdawson

techmuse writes

"The San Jose Mercury News reports that the California state legislature wants to put electronic advertising on license plates. The plate would display standard plate information when the car is moving, but would also display ads when the car is stopped for more than 4 seconds (say, at a red light). Not distracting or annoying at all! 'The bill has received no formal opposition. It passed unanimously through the Senate last month and is scheduled to be heard Monday by the Assembly Transportation Committee.'"

"The move is intended as a moneymaker for a state facing a $19 billion deficit. "

Dumb, but it's California...

If California wants to get out of debt, they might start be deporting ALL illegal aliens, including their anchor babies, sealing and securing the border and SHOOTING anyone who tries to re-enter illegally.

Just wait until the bad guys hack the control electronics - it will be a high tech version of James Bond's rotating license plate on his DB5 in Goldfinger...:^)

Q would be proud...

This goes to show that they still do not understand the problem.

They have a leak in the dam and the water level is dropping.

Do they fix the leak in the dam, no they seek another source of water (money) to keep the dam full.

California does not have a money problem. They have a spending problem.

Silly solutions from silly people

When you elect people who are anti-business, what else can they do to collect revenue?

When I get a ticket, wreck my car or possibly end up in accident killing some innocent victim because I am reading text on the back of the car that is distracting me from driving; will the CA legislature pay for everything including hospital and legal fees?

Isn’t this a form of texting that should be outlawed?

I didn’t think it was possible for people to get any dumber.

Will porn be allowed? After all, this is Kalifornicate. No religious messages, for sure, unless it’s satanic.

A judicious application of duct tape seems to be in order.

I’m assuming the car owner will be forced to pay for this “feature” — there’s no mention in the article.

But in fact I’m certain that this will be hooted down pretty quickly.

I suppose that the California legislature has never considered cutting programs to address the budget deficit rather than looking for new ways to tax citizens.

When keeping your head (or your senate seat) depends on paying tribute the barbarians, you don’t start telling them that tribute is going to be a little light this year.

You keep paying as long as you’ve got serfs to rob. And when you run out of money, you start a war.
