CODY Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal mauling Thursday of a Shoshone National Forest cabin owner by a grizzly bear. The incident took place at a site where a bear had been captured and released earlier Thursday.
Erwin Frank Evert, 70, of Cody, was reported missing by his wife to a member of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team that had been conducting research in the Kitty Creek drainage, about 10 miles east of Yellowstone National Park.
Researchers had earlier trapped and released an adult male grizzly in the area...
A study team member returned to the capture site and found Evert's body...
Steward said that Evert, who was not armed and was not carrying bear spray, apparently wandered into the capture site sometime after the bear had been released.
Chris Servheen, grizzly bear coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service... said he was unaware of what other public notifications, if any, were routinely made about bear capture efforts.
"The people doing this are highly trained professionals who follow very detailed protocols. One of the most important protocols is public safety,"
Some cabin owners have said they were unaware of research work being done in the area, and questioned whether wildlife and land management agencies were communicating effectively with the public about such activities.

Oh, wait a minute...unarmed? Make that...
shoo, shoo...
A friend of mine used to work in a state agency that shared an office with the US Forest Service in Montana. He said the USFS workers, when others were not around, tended to be very “Bear good, tourist bad”. He also noticed most of the USFS employees had never spent much time hiking in grizzly country. They wanted to bring grizzlies back to places near large cities.
For grizzly country, I prefer to hike with a 30-30 minimum. Not much for concealment, but about the smallest thing I’d want in my hands if a bear charged. That assumes I couldn’t find a 375 H&H Magnum...
I’ll have to reply to this later this evening.
Suffice it for now - ParcPersons are notoriously INCOMPETENTS! ! ! !
ParcMan “science persons” are active jokes.
Gotta go fight Miami traffic.
“we obviously need about 500,000 new government employees to be hired to go around slapping warning labels on all these dangerous bears now.”
Lets send the rats in congress and Lord 0haha and his thugs to lead and manage the census takers as they move into the next phase of getting a check from the government. Census taking should be over now. Let them put the warning lables on bear butts.
“Steward said that Evert, who was not armed and was not carrying bear spray, apparently wandered into the capture site sometime after the bear had been released.”
He has probably been wandering/hiking in that area for decades.
If they're all liberals, travel alone, and are unarmed, then I'm in favor of such a scheme.
or eaten by one.
My choice of smoothbore:
Saiga 12 with a 12 rn. mag.
I’d recommend 000 buck followed by a slug, followed by 000, etc.
The stick mag can handle 3” mag loads.
Ps Better to keep it to 10 rounds, including the chambered one, as hot 3” mag loads cause enough recoil to make the mag lip a risk, IMHO.
Prayers for Mr. Evert’s family and friends.
I loaded up the 12ga with slug just in case I ran into it outside walking the dogs. (I always wanted a Bear skin rug.)
You and me both. :)
Where do you live?
> Saiga 12 with a 12 rn. mag.
LOL!!
That would SHRED even a grizzly!
Our neighbor has one of those. I felt so inadequate with my Remington 870.
He made it up to me by allowing me to shoot it and showing me how to bump fire my AK semi auto.
What a blast. I never knew you could do that.
Precisely!
And have you noticed that Quick Draw McGraw and El Kabong were never together either.......?
I saw it exactly the same. Must be reading too many Olbermann threads.
This liberal didn’t negotiate very well. From now on I say all liberal backpackers need to take Hussein along with them to show them the gentle subtleties and nuances of bowing low to the enemy before they bite your head off.
Yeah, that’s how I read it too. I’m past due for my annual check up.
