LAGRANGE, Mo. -- A video showing LaGrange police officers shooting a dog is creating an Internet sensation and drawing the ire of some city residents.
City residents said the owner of the dog, Marcus Mays, was ticketed for not keeping it on a leash or in a pen. The LaGrange city clerk confirmed Mays has a city court appearance for the city ticket today in LaGrange. The nearly 10-minute video, shot from a camera apparently located inside a police vehicle, is posted on YouTube and shows the dog standing in front of a mobile home, tied to the home with a chain or rope. The dog, which appears to be a bulldog, does not offer any resistance and allows an officer to put a leash on it.
The next part of the video shows the dog, tied with a chain to the back of a vehicle, calmly lying down on the street as two officers talk on cell phones, one with a Taser drawn. The street signs at the intersection are visible but unreadable.
When one of the officers attempts to use a long catch pole to collar the dog, it begins to react and furiously bark at the officers, rearing up on its hind legs and lunging toward them.
The dog is put on the pole and guided to the side of the road. One of the officers then draws his gun and shoots the dog, dropping it to the ground.
The dog drops on all fours for a few seconds, then falls over on its side and begins to wag its tail. After about 30 seconds, the officer shoots the dog in the head area, then places a white blanket over the dog's body. The officer then returns to the vehicle where the camera shooting the video is located.
It's not known who put the video on YouTube, or how the video was obtained from the LaGrange Police Department. The date of the incident is also unknown. LaGrange Police Chief Dale McNelly did not return a call to The Herald-Whig. It's not known if the officers were disciplined or may be cited for shooting the dog, or if they were simply following instructions and procedure.
LaGrange police office manager Jamie Kaylor said McNelly was unavailable and would not comment about the video. City attorney Jeff Curl also declined to return calls, as did LaGrange Mayor Ronnie Powers. There are no animal control officers in LaGrange or Lewis County, as sheriff's deputies and city police officers routinely handle animal control calls.
Those cops need to be fired at minimum. There is absolutely no excuse for that. They are an embarrassment to law enforcement everywhere.
VIKING KITTIES?
With morning stars made of yarn and needles...
That’s just mean man...
You are making a judgment without having all the facts. BTW: Using a bullet to euthanize a dog is extremely common in rural communities, and specifically authorized by law in most States. It's actually quite humane, do you really want to insist that hunting is extremely inhumane and savage as well, because animals that are hunted are shot as well.
And so are you
I blame the hysterical nationalized training of LEOs by all these Buzz Razorhawk police academy trainers who travel to LEO conferences and conventions and trade tactical training tips with other Buzz Razorhawk academy trainers from all over the nation.
They bring someone else's silly crap back to Podunk Creek Police Department and all of a sudden they all insist that they need Federal matching funds for armored battering ram personnel carriers, a 40-man SWAT team with snipers in ghillie suits, .50 caliber rifles to fight off Al-Qaeda's HIND helicopters, and then they conduct rookie training where 'Shoot the dog. ALWAYS shoot the dog, don't forget to shoot the dog' is a line item checkbox task to be accomplished every time some old biddie calls the police to let them know someone's dog is off the leash.
By the way, you failed miserably with your assertion. Not once did I assert that we had all of the facts. We don’t have the facts. We have a video that only shows part of the story. We have no background information.
I merely pointed out that euthanizing an animal with a bullet is quite normal and humane.
By diverting to a different situation, you prove you make a judgment without all the facts.
Uh huh. Citation please.
You strongly suggested that what happened was OK.
Uh huh. Shut up please.
I’m a hunter... I’m also a dog owner. Taking an animal like this dog when it is restrained and doing what they did is absolutely uncalled for. I’m sorry but those cops were way out of line. Crap like that would not be tolorated in my community. There are some older folks around here who would have those cops lynched for that kind of act. Personally, I’d just be hammering the Sheriff’s department until they were removed from duty.
Laughable, there was no “diversion” to “a different situation.” I merely pointed out an objective fact, shooting an animal is not by itself, inhumane.
We don’t know what transpired in this case. I am not making any judgment call as to the decisions that the officers made, unlike some others on this thread.
Lynching a person over an animal. Yeah, that’s real sane.
You made the assertion, please back it up with a citation to a reputable source.
If an excuse is made for it, it’s probably when the dog began to give them trouble when they tried to catch it on a pole (while the dog is CHAINED to a car, mind you).
Yes, you pointed out a different situation in an attempt to divert the discussion.
