Meg Whitman, pivoting away from a primary that drove her much father to the right than she would have liked, will remind Hispanic Californians that she opposed Arizona's controversial immigration law in an ad slated to run on the Spanish-language broadcast of today's Mexico-France World Cup game.
"She respects our community," says the ad's narrator, according to a Spanish text provided to La Opinion's Pilar Marrero. "She's the Republican who opposed the Arizona law and opposed Proposition 187," say the ad, referring to the 1994 initiative -- later ruled unconstitutional -- to bar illegal immigrants from receiving public health care and education.
The ad marks a dramatic tack a way from a primary in which Whitman was at times visibly uncomfortable with her campaign's hard line, denying at one point -- mistakenly -- that her campaign was airing ads with images of a boarder fence.
Whitman is trying to undo damage done to the Republican Party among Hispanics that began in earnest with the fierce opposition to a broad immigration overhaul -- and the naturalization of many illegal immigrants -- that began in the middle of the last decade.

If this is what it takes to get the votes of the Hispanic community, wth? How can you be courting the votes of people who do not understand the basic concept of the rule of law?
Meg Whitman is a liberal.
Whatever. Poizner would have been the same, or worse.
Blech.
(Yah— that’s all I’ve got to say)
Whitmanegger?
Schwartzenwhitman?
That’s the number one reason I didn’t bother to cough up a fur-ball for either of them.
She will sell this state and our nation out at the drop of a hat.
She was lying through her teeth, on this, and just about every other issue IMO.
She can go to straight to hell as far as I am concerned.
Would you rather Jerry Brown?
The ones who are citizens and have to pay their bills, know right from wrong. It’s the illegals that don’t.
We allow the Left to game us on this to the point of absurdity.
Real conservatives should not be wasting their vote on this woman. If you are not willing to secure the border and deport the illegal aliens....you support Amnesty.
Desgraciada! Mujerzuela! Buena para nada! Inutil!
FOOL!
You court Hispanics by being against the immigration bill. They are against it like the rest of America is.
You’re caving to Democrat propaganda if you admit that the pro-Hispanic position is open borders. It isn’t. The Pro-Hispanic position is closed borders. The Hispanic community is harmed by illegal immigration as much as anyone.
EDIT: I meant for the Arizona bill, not against it.
Would you rather Jerry Brown?
Sounds like California is not getting a choice.....both Whitman and Brown are flaming liberals
Of course, too many will buy the foolish crap spewed by Hannity and others....that a “third party vote helps the Democrats”. If there is a third party candidate that is conservative....CAL voters should vote for that....and not waste votes on a GOP Liberal
A vote for a GOP Liberal is still a vote for a Liberal
Would Whitman make any difference. She is off to a strong start in action proving she is another Democrat masquerading as a Republican and she is making an equally strong case that nothing out of her mouth can be believed.
Why don't you ingrates try respecting ours for a change?
Actually, I just might rather Jerry Brown.
I voted for Schwartzenegger, reasoning he would be better than Grey Davis or Bustamante. I’m pretty sure I was wrong. Even if Schwartzenmoron is a tad less to the left than the Dem options, the key flaw is this: As a Republican (-INO), he ensures that “Republicans” get the blame for the mess in Sacramento, fairly or not.
If it’s going to be a gawd-awful mess in Sacramento, and if we’re going to have a liberal either way, I’d rather the Dems justly get the blame because their guy’s in the hot seat.
You court hispanics the way you court everyone else. By explaining conservative principles, by showing people how they apply to the problems of the day, and by being bold and upbeat in the defense of your principles.
You won’t get everyone but you’ll get the ones who agree with you, you’ll change a few minds, and thats the whole purpose to what you are doing. You don’t present a different message according to who your audience is because doing that you give up your soul. You say what you believe and you persuade people to agree with you.
Telling hispanics what you think hispanics want to hear is embarrassing to everyone involved and the people who count aren’t going to fall for it. Trying to out-pander a Democrat is a loser’s game, you can never beat them at that game.
The main problem I have with the Jerry Brown side of things is that it is the same logic that gave is Obama. Obama will do more damage in one year, than anyone could have ever imagined. As bad as Whitman might be, the state could not survive even more tax increases, its own single payor health plan, and the final destruction of what is left of business here.
