If you're looking to buy a lottery ticket this weekend in Michigan there are some bars that won't be selling them.
That's because they're staging a boycott against the state over the new smoking laws they say is hurting their business, according to our reporting partners at WSJM, Benton Harbor, Mi.
An internet-born boycott has bar owners opposed to the smoking ban, taking part in the boycott. Those bars will not offer lotto games from 11a.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.
One state official estimated the boycott could involve hundreds of bars, especially those along the Indiana border fighting to keep customers.
The “no smoking in bars” laws have bankrupted many thousands of mom & pop bars across America.

If those particular bars along the border survived the hike in the drinking age to 21, they ought to be able to weather a no-smoking ban.
I remember when the bars in Niles relied particularly heavily on students from Notre Dame and other South Bend spots, as the drinking age in Indiana was 21 as long as I can remember and the drinking age in Michigan was 18.
Well, give me a drink then.
It's foolish for a bar proprietor to prevent a paying customer from enjoying a smoke at the risk of losing business.
The smokers will just go to another bar that allows it.

I wonder if Michigan will counter by taking away their lottery machines. I would think Saturday nights are pretty big nights for lottery sales, especially Powerball (if Michigan has that).

Florida has a law that prohibits smoking in restaurants. People can smoke in bars if the bar is not also a restaurant.
Admittedly, it’s nice to go out and not come back smelling like a chimney.

California banned them all 10 years ago. They estimate 3500 went under there in the first 5 years alone.

This is a nation of free states and under the Constitution nobody can tell anyone they can't enjoy something on their own property as long as that something is a legal product.
