Both the euro and the dollar could probably function as the sole currency on this planet.

If either of them enjoyed such a position on global markets and in world affairs while being backed up by responsible governments, there wouldn’t be much of a problem neither in Europe, America or anywhere else.

But can any single currency actually continue to survive, in the long run, with government/governments behind it increasing national deficit/deficits decade after decade?

The near collapse of the Euro represents pretty clear evidence that “democratic socialism” cannot survive in Europe.It sounds like the Germans are getting sick and tired of being the cash machine of Brussels and that could prove interesting too.
