Engulfing the Internet: FCC takes next step to neutralize the net
American Spectator ^ | 6.17.10 @ 6:10AM

Posted on 06/17/2010 6:51:29 AM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

Despite opposition by a House of Representatives majority and a bipartisan group of Senators, the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday is expected to proceed with plans to impose federal government regulation of the Internet, which would essentially treat broadband networks -- and the companies that invested more than $200 billion in private capital to deploy them -- as utilities.

The commission's chairman, Julius Genachowski, and his staff have insisted that imposing federal regulations originally written in the 1930s for the telephone is the only way the Obama Administration can gain the "kind of oversight and control that we need," says an FCC staffer with ties to another Democrat commissioner....

Under the Obama Administration's plan, the FCC would be able to enforce so-called "net neutrality" rules, allowing the federal government to set how broadband and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) manage the networks. By bringing broadband and the Internet under FCC regulatory oversight, the FCC would also be able to impose policies related to speech or online business models.

"The American public really has no idea how devastating these policies are going to have on free speech and the Internet," says a Republican Senate staffer. "If they are able to impose these regulations, they would be able to impose a host of different regulations that would limit free speech online and essentially give the left the upper hand. First the auto industry, then health care and the financial services industry, now this."

Excellent insight, thanks for posting. My only nit is at the end of your post;

"The purpose of Government, articulated in the American Declaration of Independence - is to secure the inalienable rights of the Individual."

The DoI is not the instrument of law that we adhere to today, the Constitution is. But most Americans accept the DoI as part and parcel of our G-d given rights guaranteed to us in the Constitution.

anyone fighting this? republicans sure wont un do it...

The Republicans know that when they take over, all the things Oboma has done will be under THEIR control. THEY will own it all.
I've never seen the Republicans reverse anything the Democrats have done. Republicans will soon control the internet.
Washington is a case of good cop/bad cop. Both feed off each other, and both gain unlimited power and priveledge no matter who's in control at the time. We're just the tax slaves they need to fund it all.

Bush pushed through the Patriot Act because he wanted to protect this country from terrorist attacks. Certain segments of society criticized him for acting like a Nazi.

Now Obama wants to control and manage the internet -- just because he likes to control and manage things. And certain segments of society are shrugging and saying it's no big deal.

This point can't be made enough!

WHAT'S IT GONNA TAKE?

There has been marches, letter writing campaigns, phone calling, peaceful gatherings in protest.....what else is left...what is missing on that list?

If the First Amendment is removed, we will be forced to move on to the next amendment.

There is no jurisdiction. And it should not stand a Constitutional challenge.

This is clear cut government censorship. After the abuses of Viacom with their fake but accuracte October Surprise with ginned up documents from a Kinkos near Waco Texas, the FCC can go f*** themselves. They are irrelevant as to taking anyone to task over “untruthfulness”.

The FEC can go screw too after letting Bill Clinton pay back his illegal Chinese Communist election loans without jailtime.

Joe Lieberman is pushing through a “panic button” to silence the internet chatter in the event of a national emergency.

Unfortunately, Obama is busy packing the federal bench to make sure it will.

Yes, this is where "left" and "right" intersect. I am by no means an across-the-board libertarian, but this . . .

It all goes to show that the whole point of "free speech" to a liberal is the right to swear and use the "f-word." It begins and ends there. Criticism of the government is "hate speech."

Have liberals ever thought about what happens if they get kicked out and Republicans inherit all this power?

I’ve pointed out before that “with all this power” doesn’t matter to despotic rulers. Hillary was unelected and illegally accessed 900 FBI files.

They will do what they will do no matter of consequence (if any).

Lieberman’s generally a hawk on foreign policy but let’s not forget that he’s pretty solidly liberal in most other areas.

I have been saying these things for years. I said we were nothing but frogs in pots and ignoring the dangers these people posed. I also warned that sooner or later these people would HAVE to take the mask off. ANd so they have.

More than the schools and the unions, they have been infesting the federal agencies since FDR. It is HERE that they have done their best work, hence the reason why I am so hot to abolish ALL of them.

I am an ex-hippie, 60s “love child”- I KNOW these people. Since I have awakened, I have been called everything up to and including “conspiracy nut”. Well, here it is and ain’t it ugly?

I have spent years BEGGING everyone I know to wake the f%^& UP. These “americans” are our enemy. The judges (like the one who just granted ‘cumulative voting’ rights to spanish voters in New York), the educational “experts”, the media whackjobs, union “leaders” and the “new” democrat party and all their little brain dead followers, are all of more danger to us than ANY foreign enemy.

WHY do they "need" control??

They don't need it. They want it.

Sounds good but don’t count on it taking a year. More likely several (how many laws have ever been repealed?).

I agree with most of what you say.

An infamous Nazi dictator said that if you control the youth, you control the future. This is why the Communists especially target education. If you examine the “educational” institutions in Communist countries you’ll see that children are indoctrinated from an early age.

Those federal agencies you pointed out are staffed by Americans whom were raised on public “education”. They don’t question agendas. They just walk lock and step. Just like all good Communists.
