The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was first adopted in 1914 in response to the Titanic disaster. Along with mandating the number of lifeboats and the notification of a ship's routes, it also dictates that any ship in the area of a distress call will divert to assist that ship.

It is just some romantic fantasy of “ a brave young girl on the sea like in olden days of individualism....”
Those who espouse this nonsense...are like the Libs who want to go back to the “natural eco world of the days of youre”. HA!
You don’t EXPECT to have a car accident, but you are happy, I am sure, in the event that you did that conservative responsible people have established police and emergency responders to respond to your UNEXPECTED distress.
No one was mocking homeschoolers....get a grip and take a Valium.
It was earlier posted that some posters who thought Abby’s jaunt was great accused any poster who DIDN’T think it was such a bright idea as ‘BEING ANTI-HOMESCHOOLER”.
I understand the dreamy romantic 16 year old. I get that. I DON’T get the adults that support something that was ill-planned and dangerous.
analogy makes no sense...they aren’t even close.
No kidding.
Not only should Abby's family be forced to pay for the rescues, that irresponsible man who got caught in Afghanistan should be forced to pay for his rescue too.
He's way too old to take on such a strenuous challenge, he wasn't properly funded or equiped, he went into extremely dangerous territory, and he was doing it for the fame.
All of those things are warning signs.
I will BET that these parents are LIbs who voted for Obama...That dreamy romantic back to nature...Robinson Caruso idyllic concept....
global Warming.....if only we sailed instead of using huge ugly cruise ships!
She sailed. She got in trouble. She was rescued. She may do it again.
It will not make a bit of difference in your life, my life, nor any other posters on FR. It does make you look like a control freak.
I taught sailing at 12-13 yrs of age. I sailed a Sunfish out of sight of land (tho I could see the top of the water tower at Wrightsville Beach) every Saturday all summer long when I was 15=16, and caught fish to sell to the local seafood restaurants.
I wish I'd had the opportunity. I sailed on a Destroyer when I was 17...
Discussing current events on a forum means we're all control freaks?! Isn't this a discussion forum?
What are the chances you will have a car accident in the next six months. Logic here! What do actuarial tables or reported statistics say?
Whatever their politics are, this was a foolish venture.
Only comparable if you are talking about driving on icy roads with bald tires.
This agreement makes sense for so many reasons. If you charge for rescues, you’ll have poor fishermen out there who will die when they might otherwise have called for a rescue. We grumble when the Richard Bransons and Abby Sunderlands need rescuing, but those who have the ability to participate in a rescue should do so, and without regard to assumption of risk and ability to pay.
While the Australians spent a lot of money for this rescue, they got training as a result, and their own people will benefit if they need assistance on the high seas.
No, the answer is to make them pay for the rescue, that would be a good example for everyone that stunts like these have a price and you better think twice about the price tag before you try it.
Oh, it was well planned. It was planned that mucho dinero would come in.
Her trip... not so well.
And I was one of the early defenders of this travesty. The more that comes out on this, the worse it gets.
Yes it does. But I don't think many knew that the Act of 1914 existed or that it was because of the Titanic. That was why I posted it.
I don’t think you understand how tires work on ice, for what that is worth. Personally in icy season I’d be happy to have bald tires, as long as they are narrow.
Beating a dead horse isn’t discussion...
Tires don’t work on ice. And cars on well traveled roads are not a good a analogy for being alone in the Indian Ocean in winter.
I’ll pass on the valium for now... lol
Read my post again. I stated at the top that *I* was pre-emptively teasing the FR homeschoolers for typically over-reacting. I guess I should have also used sarcasm tag at the bottom...
All teasing aside, here’s my humble opinion on the subject at hand: I think it’s terrific that Abbey is courageous & adventurous enough to take on a huge challenge like this. I also think it’s terrible & scandalous that her parents would actually allow her to do it.
