(AP/CBS) Uninsured and too broke to pay for medical care to treat her painful shoulder injury, a Niles, Mich., woman shot herself in the same shoulder and went to the E.R. in hopes of obtaining free medical care.
By law, hospitals must treat emergency patients even if they don't have insurance.
Kathy Myers' troubles started when her 80-lb Golden Lab yanked on his leash during a skirmish with her Chihuahuas. The big dog yanked Myer's shoulder as well, injuring her rotator cuff.
After a month of agonizing pain, the unemployed 41-year-old used her in-laws' gun to take matters into her own hands. She placed icepacks and pillows around her head and neck, and then pulled the trigger, according to Wood TV 8 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Myers says she made a rational choice: she had hoped that the doctors who mended her flesh wound would also fix her rotator cuff.
But her plan didn't work out quite the way she had hoped. Last Thursday doctors treated the bullet wound, but instead of fixing her injured shoulder, they gave her some antiinflammatory drugs and sent her home.
Though shooting yourself to get medical care may seem a bit extreme, Myers told reporters at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Ind., that she has no "suicide wish" and that she "wants to live" despite her problems.
And her problems may only be increasing. Besides being in even greater pain, Myers might have to go before a judge to face a charge of firing a weapon within city limits.
Myers, who recently lost her job with an Indiana hazardous-waste removal company, is one of 1.2 million Michigan residents without health insurance.

I saw she shot herself in the right shoulder -- so I guess we can expect she'll be collecting a steady stream of SS disability payments for the next 25 years. At least she won't have kids and pass on her genes.

She finds it more important to feed 3 dogs than to care for her own self, her realatives would rather loan her a gun to shoot herself than lend her money to care for herself! And now you want me to feel sorry for her and give up my hard earned money to support anothers health care?

Same here. I ruptured 3 discs in my neck with a job-related accident and was told by a neurologist I would lose the use of my arms without surgery....but only gave me a 50/50 chance of not coming from surgery a quadreplegic. Not good enough!
I took the advice of a Chiropractic Dr. friend and spent 6 weeks in bed to allow healing (same amount of time I'd have to be bed-ridden with surgery)then went to rehab for strengthening and back to work within a couple years.
Some of those people in rehab were more than 2 years post-surgical and still in great pain.....hooked on drugs and had lost most everything. I'm now 13 years down the road and occasionally have pain if I lift too much...but nothing unmanageable.
Then he may not be here. I know someone that was banned in 2005 and their page is still up.

That’s great! My worst pain was in the first 2 years. It still hurts. I can only get 6 hours of sleep at a time. But I’m STILL not going to shoot myself. :-)
Lucky you, just wait until you are old and can't sleep 4 or 5 hours in a row without having to make that long trip to take a leak.
Oh I’m already there. Potty break in the middle of the 6 hours. One of my “Good night” joys used to be a cup of tea before bed. I had to quit that! And I wake several times to try and get comfortable again. I finally get up after 6 hours.
OOPS, just noticed that you are female. I don’t believe women have that “going” problem.
My wife doesn’t have a problem, she’s 57 and I will be 65 on the 29th of this month.
I’m 60 and it’s been going on the last year or so. It could be my back. I’ve noticed that it affects nearly everything as I have a curvature and the herniated discs are in my lower back. ....right in the middle of the curve.
