Sharron Angle Was Once a Registered Democrat
CBS News ^ | June 16, 2010 | Stephanie Condon

Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.

Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.

"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."

In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.

The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.

"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."

Yes, the campaign-created aura of electability. It’s already fraying.

Oh yes! CBS puts out a pointless tidbit and we're all in disarray!!!

OK, now we know who you are. So why are you even here?

I wasn’t a conservative when I started voting. But it didn’t take long for me to become one.

Actually, he was once a woman. That’s what the whole crux of the birth certificate issue. There was no Barrack Hussein Obama but their was a BARBARA ELAINE OBAMA born in that Honolulu Hospital. She/he was born with genital ambiguity and was raised as a girl.
At puberty, male genitalia began to descend, stitching and sewing by the best Haiwai’an seamstresses worked in round the clock shifts. Unfortunately, his baseball throwing and leash-holding skills remained effeminate.

I didn’t even start voting till I became a conservative.

Me too. At least we didn't do any damage when we were "democrats." I thought I wasn't interested in politics. Then a nice man named Easter Thomas gave me "the test," which opened my self-described liberal eyes to the fact that I was actually a conservative. And the game was on. I was 27.

Mrs.Bill worked for Goldwater. That doesn't mean she was for Goldwater. It might well mean she was doing a project for her Poli-Sci class.

It's an issue when you become a Democrat during the Reagan years. It's shows HORRIBLE judgment.

I wonder how old she was then. When I was twenty I walked in a nuclear freeze march. People grow up. If all they can come up with is that she was once a Dem, I am very pleased. I'm waiting for the IRS audit, the allegations of affairs and racist to begin. The Dems will stop at nothing to try and salvage Reid's seat.

To me it’s just a distraction. This is the best they got to throw against her growing popularity and fund raising success. Aside from that Reid will lie and distort drowning the air waives with it till November along with his accomplices.

Yes, that will happen. Unforunately I personally think there’s enough there to stick. I never thought she was a strong candidate, and I don’t see anything now which makes me want to reevaluate. If she beats Reid, it’s a measure of Reid’s unpopularity and nothing more.

I don’t think I was ever truly liberal. I grew up in a very conservative small town where most of the people were conservative so liberalism was completely out of the norm.

I can’t remember ever being OK with abortion or thinking the government should take care of me.
