If one of your pilots gets ill, you never know who else on the plane might be able to help land the aircraft safely.
On Monday, it was a flight attendant with an an inactive pilot's license who helped land an American Airlines jumbo jet after the co-pilot became incapacitated because of stomach flu.
Patti DeLuna, a 61-year-old flight attendant with American Airlines, helped the captain safely land the Boeing 767 with 225 passengers on board.

Heard this morning that it was the co-pilot who was ill. The pilot asked if anyone on board had a pilot’s license and this flight attendant stepped up.

The 767 can easily be flown by a single pilot, but putting someone with flight and company experience in the right seat helps the PIC shed some workload in an emergency situation and was a smart use of available resources.

Think that the copilot had watched one to many gladiator movies?

I’m a private pilot, and that is always the fantasy isn’t it? I think every private pilot has wondered “what if” about this kind of thing.
That’s great she could help.
But it wasn’t going to mean life or death.
Either pilot is capable of safely bringing the aircraft down.
Perhaps if there were complications, help could become more critical.

The life of everyone on board depends upon just one thing: finding someone back there
who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.

Not sure if there were 'complications or not, but the sky over the airport looked like this right before the landing. ;-)

But just think . . . if she wasn’t there to help, they’d still be up there!
