Weak Speech from an Indecisive Obama : Short on Specifics and Full of Holes
National Review ^ | 06/16/2010 | Larry Kudlow

One problem with President Obama’s Oval Office speech was his declaration that 90 percent of the oil spill would be captured in “coming days and weeks.” Ah, if only government were that strong and powerful. Trouble is, the spill rate late yesterday afternoon was again revised upward toward 60,000 barrels per day from the prior estimate of 25,000.

To most Americans, and especially those in the Gulf, it’s the spill rate of capture that matters most. Perhaps there’s a magic wand to cure this problem — maybe a spill-rate de-stimulus package — but so far the magic cure remains elusive.

In addition, the president did not announce a Jones Act waiver to bring foreign-flag tankers into the Gulf area. Nor did he announce a new task force of hands-on experienced oilmen from the likes of ExxonMobil and other big oil sisters who actually know what they are doing.

Another problem was Obama’s arrogant announcement that he will be informing BP’s chairman “that he is to set aside” some undisclosed asset amount ($20 billion) for the government-run escrow fund to pay for the spill damages. Trouble is, there are no laws to permit our government to force such financial retribution. Not even a new TARP, at least not yet. Did someone say nationalization? But stock-option and credit-default-insurance markets are already pricing in a BP bankruptcy.

And while the media waited breathlessly for a clear Obama push for cap-and-trade, there was only a passing mention of the House bill, rather than a full-throated call to arms. So it was an indecisive Obama, a rather meek and defensive Obama, in terms of reducing carbon dependence. Of course, Obama knows that cap-and-trade politics will drive up Republican numbers even more in the fall.

But folks would rather see a full-throated and comprehensive energy plan conducted on all fronts — carbon and non-carbon — that would unleash energy entrepreneurs and existing businesses to create more power and more jobs and more economic growth. Besides stopping the spill, this is the key point.

Laws? Obama don't need no stinking laws. He will confiscate private property because he can.

In the World of idiotic, boring left wing nonsense from Obama, I didn’t think this speech was all that bad.

It looks like people have given up on him. They are watching him real close now, so their BS meters are set on high.

Plus he bungled the oil spil and is defending himself and is still looking to tax us to death.

Just a thought, if the oil industry is evil and supposed to be gouging us to make profits.

And the leftist enviros say profit is bad.

Why aren’t the “green” companies evil for demanding we pay more for their products and that we tax their competitors out of business? Shouldn’t they be doing all this to “save the planet”?

Our great leader is meeting with BP today.......for 20 minutes. Tell me what he can accomplish in 20 minutes. He must have a golf date after the meeting.

So it wasn’t just me that saw his speech that way.

“Incompetent” is such an inadequate word to describe this now failing obama regime. He turns out to be malicious as well.

BP must certainly have sincere regrets for EVER supporting the campaign of this total misfit for America. He would do well as perhaps the dictator of some little republic in the foothills of the Himalayas, except he would want to be declared “king”. Well, he IS king, in a country of maybe one.

When are we going to start mining the mineral wealth of Afghanistan?

I didn’t think this speech was all that bad.

Well lets see:

He tried to blame Bush

He tried to demonize the oil industry.

He provided little information about how the spill will be stopped.

Provided little information about what he is doing to move forward with a clean up.

Used the opportunity to push his agenda item - cap & trade.

Implied that he would confiscate the assets of BP.

Not a bad speech at all - if you are Hugo Chavez!

A Chicago underworld boss can accomplish a lot in a 20 minute meeting.

Speech was probably thrown together at the last minute. This is such a distraction for the bubble president. He is just reacting to pressure to do something about the spill. 50+ days into it. Can’t forget, he is our historic first sock puppet president. He wasn’t supposed to be bothered by pesky problems like this. He was supposed to give speeches and party like a rock star. Well enough of that, reality is that he is in the office of the president and doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know. WAY out of his league and over his head in this. His true self is showing. Arrogant, ignorant and angry. Won’t solve anything.

You know that was an important address; He wore a tie for the occasion! What, no sweater, for a full Jimmah redux? Maybe he could have borrowed one of those three-sizes-too-small things from Michelle’s closet.

Who is running this show, anyway? It’s a mixture of sissiness, thuggery, rainbows and unicorns that blows my mind. Is it that ballerina, Rahm? Maybe that femme fatale of the Chicago cesspool, Jarrett. Obama has said that he and Michelle run all their major decisions past her. What a bunch of mendacious buffoons.

yes that’s my point, not that bad for Obama. At least it was short. But I think people don’t trust him anymore so he bombed.

I have another suggestion for another black-frame ‘poster’. Use last night’s photo of Obama sitting behind the shiny clean desk in the oval office, and caption it merely EMPTY.
