PHOENIX (AP) -- An increase in smuggling violence at the Sonoran Desert National Monument about 80 miles south of Phoenix has prompted a stronger warning to visitors about drug and immigrant traffickers passing through the public lands, officials said Tuesday.
The monument and three other federal lands in Arizona already have signs warning visitors that they may encounter smugglers. But 11 new signs have recently been erected...

Strong warnings are soooo much more effective than a military force.
I am working in Tucson AZ right now and 80 miles south of Phoenix means 20 miles west of Tucson
This place is beautiful- but some places are a mess with this immigrations stuff
The problem is NOT that we have immigration laws, our laws are the same as Mexico. the problem is the sudden enforcement of that law.
MEXICO ENCOURAGED illegal ‘migration’ and Arizona was forced to start enforcing the law itself after 40 years of the US government letting it slide.
Now you have good people here who have homes and lives for 20 years suddenly having to face a law they came to expect would never be enforced. They do not have a ‘home’ in Mexico any more.
This is infuriating. We no longer CONTROL OUR OWN TERRITORY. Nice that taxpayers are providing for the upkeep of a place that they can’t use because the smugglers have taken it over. On US soil. The government has ceded it to Mexican criminals. And our government’s response is to WARN US about the danger, instead of policing and cleaning up the damn place. Maybe those 1,200 troops BO says he is sending to the border all need to go right there. Speeding drug smugglers indeed. THIS IS A FRIGGING DISGRACE.
Tough. They came here illegally in full knowledge of what they were doing. “Good” or not, they broke our law. That makes them criminals. Even if the love little kittens and drink warm milk before they go to bed at night. They have no right to be here. They have as much of a home in Mexico now as they had here when they arrived in Arizona.
They should have thought of that when they came here illegally. They will get no sympathy from me. Ever!
border outrage ping
And I'm not referring solely to Congress.
Would it have killed this lugnut AP “reporter,” Jacques Billeaud, to have bothered to find out what the signs actually have written on them? No picture, nor word throughout the entire piece of crap story to indicate just what these “strong warnings” are.
Cry me a river... Can I go to Mexico and buy a house and know it will not be taken at a whim??? No...
Now, if I rape a couple kids then stop,,,wait a decade,, I should not be charged?
TOO BAD. Those 'good people' are part of the illegal immigration problem.
I have to agree. Even though they believed the law wouldn’t be enforced, it’s no excuse for not pursuing the path to citizenship anyway at some point in the ‘20 years’ or so they’ve enjoyed the benefits of living in the Land of the Free.
when are the people going to go and re take the land? We already know that the gov’t will do nothing. Time for the people to stop whining and take action
What a surprise it would be for the drug smugglers to be driving around out there one day, business as usual, and come across several thousand well armed Americans. All they’d have to do is shoot their tires out.
ambush them.
Arizona is a beautiful state.
Way past time to reclaim our country. That is ridiculous that warnings have to be issued in one of our National Monuments.
