In Huntsville, officers remember Ablanedo's life

The rows of officers snapped to attention, arms raised in a salute, at 4:35, when a van pulled up to deliver the seven members of Ablanedo’s family who will witness Powell’s execution.

For four minutes, they held the salute as Bruce and Judy Mills, Ablanedo’s 87-year-old mother Betsy and other family members were greeted by hugs from Acevedo. After reviewing the assembled officers, sometimes waving, the family was led inside the unit.

Once the doors closed, the officers broke ranks and milled around, talking and mopping their brows.

Suddenly, the protesters fired up their microphone: “We are here because in one hour the state of Texas is going to murder David Lee Powell,” a voice loudly proclaimed — greeted by cheers from many of the police officers.

The protesters, now numbering about two dozen, are about 100 yards from the officers.

“Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?” the protester’s voice continued.

David Lee Powell gunned down an APD officer 32 years ago with 10 shots from his AK-47. He's about to get started with his dirt nap. The caterwauling from the Austin-Mexican has been screechy and loud for the past several weeks. Good riddance to this pos.

It’s OK to kill an innocent, but spare the murderers.
