MONROE, Ohio (WDTN) - A large statue of Jesus that has been seen by millions across the country was destroyed by a fire late Monday night.
The King of Kings statue that stood outside the Solid Rock Church located on Union Road just off Interstate 75 is now in ruins. Only a few wire frames are still standing.
Officials are still investigating, but lightning is likely what sparked the blaze. The fire also damaged the attic of the church's amphitheater.
Church officials say it will cost $700,00 to resurrect the giant Jesus.
Word of the fire spread quickly. Many church members couldn't believe what had happened and came to see for themselves.
What they found left them shocked and saddened.
"This is not right," a church member named Gifty says. "We just all have to go on our faith and ask God. This cannot be a coincidence."
"I was pretty upset," Andy Caudill says. "Seeing a big thing of our Lord and Savior gone. It's pretty sad."
The statue was built in 2004. The 42-foot span between its outstretched arms grabbed the attention of motorists as they drove by it.
A sign along the highway reads "We will rebuild".
Big Butter Jesus
Based on what else has been posted it sounds like this statue was a lightening rod wrapped in styrofoam and fiberglass. I hope the next incarnation of this statue is built with some more non-flammable materials.
Last year a tornado came out of nowhere and split the cross on the steeple of a Minneapolis church EXACTLY at the time they church was scheduled to vote for gay pastors.
The creamy butter color always made it look like it was sculpted out of butter
“sounds like this statue was a lightening rod wrapped in styrofoam and fiberglass.”
Or a golden calf.
If Larry Bishop says it cost $700K to replace you can bet that counting his cut.
For anyone at FR not familiar with the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio it’s run by Larry and Darlene Bishop. They are your classic TV preacher types, lots of show.
$700k sounds might steep for fiberglass...
I think God has spoken on this issue, already.
I didn't even think of this till you mentioned it. I have to wonder... is $700k to build a statue a good use of tithings? Now that I am thinking about it I would have some serious reservations about spending that kind of money for this purpose if this was my church.
Go Buckeyes!
(that picture made me LOL)

There are equally pompous and grandiose mosques in the vicinity. I think this was image was intended in part as a stick in their eye.
Like Peter’s swordsmanship though, the Lord of Hosts does not really need the assist.

Clearly. The statue was as disgraceful and unsulting as it was ugly. Good riddance.
Understandable... but even if that is the case, it could have been better built. No one is going to be impressed by a "paper mache" "god."
I see that statue from a distance, and it reminds me more of the scene in Platoon, when Willem Dafoe meets his end.
Exactly how many people could that $700k have fed? It’s why I have a problem with televangelists and mega churches of today.

Yeah, with really high minarets, supposedly lightning magnets...
Makes you think...
Seems a bit ... ostentatious. What Would Jesus Spend ... on a statue of Himself? At least build it fireproof next time.

Exodus 20:4-6
4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,
6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
