Thought about it, actually; Wyoming too (no state income tax).

But... it’s cold up there. Too cold to be energy self-sufficient, IMHO.

Checked out the area myself -
growing season is a problem.
Solar power would be limited,
and putting up a windmill is putting up a beacon that says “WE HAVE ELECTRICTIY HERE!”

I would disagree, there a lots of trees, in Idaho, and more coal than the entire country can use, in Wyoming.

OK, folks, there are a couple of counties in upper Idaho that are worth looking at.

Like Alaska, they best be able to withstand killer winters in northern Idaho or Spokane.

The winter of 2007-2008 brought an unofficial total snowfall of 92.6 inches!
The winter of 2008-2009 brought an unofficial total snowfall of 97.7 inches!
The winter of 2007-2008 we set an all-time record of the latest ever recorded snowfall in Spokane's history (records go back to around 1870). The airport recorded a trace of snow on June 10th! . Yes, June 10th!
