The Obama Administration handed out more than $400 million in awards to federal employees last year, up by more than $80 million from the prior year, according to new government data.
The biggest winners were air traffic controllers and top managers in Washington, a review of fiscal year 2009 salary reports from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management showed.
OPMs data, obtained by the Asbury Park Press through a freedom of information request, account for 1.3 million employees, or about 65 percent of the federal civilian work force.

This needs to be ALL OVER THE NET - immediately.
$400 million is a tiny amount. Federal employees’ award amounts are a much smaller percentage of their benefit outlays than anything you find in the private sector.
I’d like to see the same reaction by the fedgov that they had to AIG paying bonuses after receiving a bailout.
the executives should be fired, the money should be confiscated from accounts, and their salaries should be radically reduced
I won’t be holding my breath...
Our brave men and women in the US military need a bonus ...
not one of the bureaucrats of the federal monolith.
All bonuses to federal workers, including Congress, should be banned.
Then we need to address the unwieldy federal pay schedules with pay based on the city you work in.
With this money they can buy 30 6-packs of gluten free beer!
But the big, fat pension, with COLA’s and lifetime health insurance for producing nothing is still pretty good.
Obamao has those federal, union employees covered.
Bonus for what? Government is a net loss, so they’re being awarded for what, most lost?
I beg to differ...the private sector doesn't give out bonuses via our tax dollars.
In this Economic recession, you'd think bonuses and cost of living allowances would be frozen!

The cold, hard facts are that if they didn't offer premium pay for working in those cities (in mostly VERY DANGEROUS downtown locations) they'd not have any employees willing to go there year after miserable year (and most government jobs involve working on projects stretching over decades, so you can't just replace them at the drop of a hat).
Rather than raise everyone's wage everywhere just so they can get a few specialists in some places, they raise just those specialists' pay.
Oh, yeah, and screw everybody else who works in a less dangerous, less costly place.
Just the way it is.
As many government employees there are, this is hardly surprising. I’d be more interested in how it was distributed.
There are probably several people at Goldman Sachs combined that received more money than this in bonuses.
And "lifetime medical insurance" is NOT FREE.
Your sure Goldman Sachs is still a private company and not a government agency? It’s so hard to keep up with the Fascism brigade.
Screw the high risk. Others work in those same downtown ares for state and local governments as well as private companies.
Sounds to me like one way to reduce the federal government workforce and close and sell off what in reality is unneeded building from the federal inventory.
Sorry, if I seem harsh. Spent upwards of 30 years in the military, didn’t get Hazardous Duty pay for working in Washington DC or any where else state-side.
Plus we can get rid of the gov’t unions too. Excessive overhead demands radical excisions.
Social Security didn’t get a COLA increase this year. The majority of federal government employees are covered by Social Security. Only a few elderly holdovers under only CSRS are not covered. They won’t receive it either when they retire. BTW, CSRS and FERS retirees didn’t get a COLA increase this year either ~ see http://www.myfederalretirement.com/public/376.cfm
Agree. Bonuses for what? Their vote.
It’s not the amount - it’s the hypocrisy.
