Sailor Abby Sunderland's Dad Signed Her To TV Deal Before Her Doomed Voyage

Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

Laurence Sunderland, a sailing instructor who lives in the middle-class Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks with his pregnant wife and seven kids, opened their home to film crews four months ago.

Ooops, meant for Thurston Howell to be included.

I was cutting wood and topping trees at 14.

For the uninitiated, topping trees requires climbing to a point where the tree will be well... topped.

Secure yourself in and get to work with a chainsaw 30-50+ above ground.

And the reason you top it is because there is not enough room for the tree to fall, which is even more dangerous.

forcing your child to make a living for you is exploitation

She wanted to do it, she was NOT forced! What is wrong with trying to make a buck doing what you love? Wouldn't we all want to do that?

Four months ago.
As often opined on threads about homely/ugly teachers that abuse
their student(s)...sounds like Mr. Sunderland wanted to at least
look guilty.

These anti-Abby (and her parents) posts all deserve to have barf-alerts. It’s bizarre. The media will give a story an anti-conservative slant and everyone here says you can’t trust them. Then they report on this with a slant and everyone jumps on board and follows them hook, line and sinker.

What's bizarre are the allegedly media savvy posters here who conflate adventure/self-sufficiency/conservatism with an obvious, money-grubbing publicity stunt.

Narcissism and exhibitionism aren't conservative values IMO.

This was a risky scheme for a lifetime meal ticket.

Understanding and conquering risk is what makes America exceptional, beating the odds on risky activities, I’m ashamed so many “conservatives” want this girl to be home leading a normal life when the girl obviously wants her own life to be an extraordinary experience. The “conservatives” on this thread want to take that option away from her “for her own good.” Sickening.

Those who are not wired for this kind of thing can't understand it and post negative comments projecting their opinions on Abby or the parents. The rest of us say "GO ABBY!" (and never the twain shall meet.")

Excellent point. I'm starting to think it's a waste of time trying to argue with the Abby haters.

You are completely wrong about “No Talent” required for boating. Fine if you are in a lake, in the bay or within land sight but, getting beyond the horizon?

No way you are going to that with with fancy gadgets and book smart.

It takes a level of skill and intuitiveness you just can’t imagine.

besides those fancy gizmos like radios and GPS mess up all the time and if you can’t read a compass, map, stars and use a sextant, you will most likely be screwed quickly and dead in the water, followed shortly by dead.

That is not what was said this morning from a biographer who did the interview with Fox. He said that she was really afraid but that her father had already signed the TV deal and that was forcing her to do it.

I’m sure we’ll all be reading about her journey in Playboy soon enough.

Its a shame so many here have the knee jerk reaction that those of use who oppose her efforts are having a knee jerk reaction...

LOL, yeah, me and about 3 other FReepers seem to be supporting her. Hardly "so many". But, what ever... :P

Actually . . . yes. The Australian government said they would not seek reimbursement and I was going on that. I try not to read the personal-interest stories that the media loves so much.

I couldn’t agree more and what an idiot.

I don’t sail alone but I do hike alone and have taken others with me. I am always the cool head and looking for signs, taking notes along the way and making my marks.

walking off into the woods and thinking your GPS is gonna do it just plain stupid.

Single most important item for navigation is a compass and you need two. To judge against each other and in case one is lost or broken.

Don’t forget to take your dead reckoning so you can get back.

Best part is they work without batteries and even when there no light or cloud cover.

It is a lot of work to be on a boat an get where you want to.

There are no landmarks.

They’ve already said they can’t afford to pay and said that either the Aussies eat it and ask the US government to reimburse them.

Shameful. Perhaps social services should check into this family.

Perhaps they should check into all families who home-school their children and faithfully attend their evangelical Christian church, and all families and persons who according to Brian Gonzalez, "rarely go out and rarely speak to others."

I'm sure you can come up with other criteria for reporting on your neighbors and calling in the government. Can't you?

Speaking of Sarah, what is the difference between 5 children whose mother is always gallivanting the nation and endlessly seeking publicity and a family of 7 children with one on the way receiving some unwanted and some planned publicity?

In a FReepmail you asked me

“What has that got to do with it?”

To do with what ???

What is the “what” ???

Interesting. The original report was that Australia said they would not seek reimbursement citing the fact that many Australians have needed rescuing over the years and that this is something that all members of the world community just do for each other. If that changed, I wonder if it is because this has become a media-driven event and that the media have caused this reimbursement issue to take a course it otherwise would not have taken.
