Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

Laurence Sunderland, a sailing instructor who lives in the middle-class Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks with his pregnant wife and seven kids, opened their home to film crews four months ago.

“I’m sure we’ll all be reading about her journey in Playboy soon enough.”

If she hurries she can break a record for that publication. Dad could probably clear some cash for it - and really, if she wants to do it, she should be allowed to.

right?

“Understanding and conquering risk is what makes America exceptional, beating the odds on risky activities, I’m ashamed so many “conservatives” want this girl to be home leading a normal life when the girl obviously wants her own life to be an extraordinary experience. The “conservatives” on this thread want to take that option away from her “for her own good.” Sickening.”

Listen to the sanctimony!

What if she chose to be a porn star? Wouldn’t that qualify as “risky” and “her own life”....and probably an “extraordinary experience”?

Why shouldn’t she be allowed to, if she wants to?

I have no problem with her being a porn star as long as she is of age. What people do in their bedrooms is of no concern to me. Too many on here play Democrat in “knowing whats good for people” better than those people do.

>>>> "The more I hear about this story, the worse it gets.

The guy who built the boat said it was not suitable for this attempt.

Some sailing association refused to sponsor the trip, because they believed the time of year to be too dangerous.

Her electrical charging system was not adequate to keep the autopilot going.

This is not 'the spirit of America' on display, here." <<<<

Even worse yet is that when she had to go to shore, and her dad flew overthere, he "repaired" the boat in such a way to almost ensure that the mast would break.

Seriously!!!

Talk about a sicko dysfunctional family!

Yep, it's absolutely unbelievable, I feel really sorry for this little girl.

“I have no problem with her being a porn star as long as she is of age.”

I don’t think anyone would have a problem with her sailing around the world if she was of age, too.

“Too many on here play Democrat in “knowing whats good for people” better than those people do.”

You, my friend, are doing the exact same thing. Society has said that underage porn is bad and there are laws against it. But if we are now in the “let a 16 year old do whatever she wants” realm and it includes having her dad sign up for a reality TV series and then throw her in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the winter time “because she wanted to” then we may as well make it legal for her to be a porn star too - after all, if a teenager can make bad decisions to sail around the world (we can all agree it was a bad decision, can’t we?) then why shouldn’t she be allowed to do whatever else she wants - just because she wants to - regardless of whether it is advisable, or legal?

A voyage with all safety precautions taken is not analogous to a career as a porn star no matter how much you want it to be. Under your logic I suppose we should suspend all “ride along” programs where a teenager is placed in the passenger seat of a police car in order for them to observe the officer’s routine and possibly pursue a career as a LEO. Afterall, under your logic that teenager just isn’t capable of making the decision to be there. Police officer’s actually GO TO TROUBLE SPOTS, making the risks very high for the teenager. Afterall, if we let teenagers ride in risky police cars adn be on site at risky crime scenes we might as well let them be porno stars right? Get real.

When both navigation systems inevitably failed Abby stopped in Cape town to replace them. Her Father flew down to help. As well as replacing the navigation system he helped with repairs.

Rather than wait for a cradle at the boat yard to hoist the boat out to repair a scratch in the hull, they did the most boneheaded and dangerous repair you can do on a sailboat. They tied a rope to the top of the mast and using leverage pulled the boat over to expose the hull (photos on Abby's blog Thursday May 13).

I have seen masts snap when this has been tried and the fact that her mast later broke might not be coincidental.

That action creates enormous stress on the mast and deck fittings. It is something you do on hobby-cats and small sailboats, not on a 40 foot boat if there are any alternatives.

Again, incompetence, rushing and ignorance setting her up for failure.

Abby travelled ALONE on seas that experienced sailors would NOT sail in the winter.

Comparing this act of Child Abuse to teens riding along with adult cops in squad cars --- shows how irrational many Americans are about Abby's utterly dysfunctional family and weirdo parents.

No, I did not mean it for Thurston; I meant it for you; I was simply remarking on the way YOU were being addressed.

Just pathetic.

“A voyage with all safety precautions taken...”

If they had all been taken she would have not been in the Indian Ocean in winter.

Under your logic a teen should be allowed to do anything any time because they “want to”. Nonsense.

You and the rest of the Sunderland groupies are a bunch of faux adventurers presuming to lecture those with good sense about the risk/reward equation.

Let her fulfill her dream at 18 and nobody cares whether its a float around the globe or the skin flick.

I really appreciated reading YOUR postings in this messagethread, so I guess I was ... kind of ... "commiserating" in that posting.

I really feel very badly for that young girl, and I hope that Abby can overcome what must have been some pretty shabby parenting. Poor thing.

Or she could just go at 16 with her parents permission and the self-righteous nanny staters who are angry that a human would dare take a risk they wouldn't consider could just shut their mouths and let the girl define her own limitations.

“Or she could just go at 16 with her parents permission and the self-righteous nanny staters who are angry that a human would dare take a risk they wouldn’t consider could just shut their mouths and let the girl define her own limitations.”

You forgot your previous requirement “With all safety precautions taken....” which would undoubtedly include a look at the calendar and the prevailing sea conditions in the Indian Ocean.

You are the most angry about this. You, along with the Sunderlands ignore the danger that the inevitable rescue entails for the rescuers.

If it is adventure and challenging the human body and spirit that she craves, perhaps she should join the sea rescue teams.

If it is attention and a reality TV show she seeks it’s too late - she’s already spent her 15 minutes of fame. Nobody cares about her anymore - at this point she’s another clueless spoiled brat that thinks that a pink unicorn is going to crap cash so she can “chase her dream”.

You could send them some cash. They seem to need it.
