‘Fox News North’ and the assertive new conservatism

‘Fox News North’ and the assertive new conservatism:

With all the fuss over fake lakes, summit bloat and political mergers, it was easy to miss a significant media development last week: Quebecor Media is launching a news and opinion network to counter mainstream Canadian journalism. "Fox News North" hasn’t even been officially announced, but it’s already causing a stir because of its apparent goals and because its chief organizer is a former top aide to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Kory Teneycke is already signing up right-friendly talent for the new channel, which will clearly attract an audience but also must overcome hurdles before it gets to air. Federal broadcast regulations will be the first, since Quebecor wants the channel to be mandatory on basic cable, guaranteeing it a revenue stream.

More power to ‘em. We need Canada’s help on this else the leftists will permanently relegate us to third world status (of course, they will retain their riches).

Knowing some of the history of the CRTC and broadcast oversight in Canada, I suspect the government there is going to do everything conceivable to throw roadblocks in the way of Fox North.

This is hilarious. You can tell that the guy who wrote the story is a liberal and wrote like he had a big spoonful of spoiled egg and alum in his mouth.

I doubt the federal government under Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper would interfere. Not sure of the makeup of the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Television Commission)- appointed by, but not managed by the Cabinet. Also don't know what regulatory requirements would have to be met in Quebec.

Update to this comment:

Tory insiders and behind-scenes lobbying pave path to new 'Fox North' launch. On March 30, 2009, Prime Minister Stephen Harper sat down for lunch in New York with Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes. Full article here.
