(CNSNews.com) - Actor Kevin Costner told a press conference on Capitol Hill that if a machine produced by a company in which he is a partner had been used earlier to contain the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we would be keeping that [the oil] offshore. The machine, which Costner invested more than $20 million to develop, can separate oil from water to clean up oil spills. Costner said that BP, the oil company whose damaged well is the source of the spill, had recently placed an order for deploying 32 of the machines.
Were coming to this fight very late, said Costner. I think everybody would recognize that. And so were going to do the things that we can do but this company is poised to mobilize in order to step this up and to create an environment where people can go back to work. There is a single moment that exists right at this moment and that is there are people out of work. Theres a moratorium and theres no way to lift that unless I believe the government feels that people can operate in a safe way. This represents that pivot point.
If we want to discuss the what ifs looking back, I think you could fill in the blanks of understanding if these machines were already deployed, what we would be looking at, said Costner. I could scale this out for you and we would be chasing this oil out at the derrick itself. We couldnt do anything about the size of the leak but we would be chasing that and we would be keeping that offshore.

Kevin Costner is a washed up actor trying to get his name in the news somehow.
Hmmmmmmm.
Actors commenting on specific issues of marine petroleum engineering.......
Any word on what quarry truck drivers think about gothic architecture?
Costner at least put his money where his mouth is and has been showing a sincere desire to help. The ‘coming to this very late’ part is something I didn’t understand. Weren’t they down there at least 3 weeks ago? After Costner gets blocked he might just start veering to the right because Obama is not going to allow anyone in there to help solve this.
I’d trust Kevin Costner’s expertise over 0bama’s at this point.
He and his brother started the development of these machines after the exon valdez spill. He’s laid out 20mil and his brother is a scientist. That probably qualifies him a bit more than say....Obama or any of his flunkies.
Yep
Thats like asking your local plummer for medical advice.
Or a Freeper for spelling advice. ;)
But what did James Cameron have to say?
Don’t know if his machine will do what he claims but it sure as hell couldn’t hurt to give it a try. What is there to lose?
Sorry. I guess I didn’t.
I am glad he is trying to help. God Bless him for actully showing up down there.

But more than the PROS who work for BP?
Did anyone mention excluding them? If BP ordered 32 of his machines, they surely did it after the engineers researched it. BP also tried recruiting former employess for their expertise. They are being hammered and I don't know if it's justified because I'm not sure anyone truly knows what happened that day. But they're smart in bringing others 'on board' for their help/ideas. I still say plug the hole by power driving Obama head-first into it... but that's just me...
Ditto. The guy’s invested 20 million of his own money (and it’s not like he can command the huge paychecks he once did)- so if his machines are a failure in the Gulf it’ll probably hurt his business.
And at least he’s doing more than playing golf and hoops.

Off base, and totally incorrect.
Costner got into this oil-spill clean-up machinery business years ago and knows a whole lot more about it than you do. Hannity talked about this on his radio show weeks ago.
