Only because so many people misused it. What the online dictionary and 1978 thesaurus did is to English what situational ethics is to morality. It would be the same as writing "mischievous" and "grievous" and "athletics" and "album" as "mischievious" and "grievious" and "atheletics" and "alblum" because many people keep mispronouncing them.
