Russian warship to visit San Francisco

A Russian warship will pay a rare visit to San Francisco later this month.

The guided missile cruiser Varyag left Vladivostok on June 4 bound for San Francisco and will arrive on June 20 for a five-day stay.

The cruiser sailed in company with the Russian navy tanker Boris Butoma and the salvage tug Fotiy Krylov. It was not clear whether these two ships will accompany the Varyag to San Francisco.

The Russian ships are commanded by Rear Adm. Vladimir Kasatonov, and the purpose of the visit, which may include other California ports, is to promote U.S.-Russian military cooperation, according to a spokesman for the Russian Pacific Fleet.

No one at the port of San Francisco could remember the last time a Russian naval vessel visited the West Coast, though merchant ships from the Russian Far East occasionally call at San Francisco Bay.

A true rust-bucket Slava-class

Re-entered service in the Pacific Fleet in early 2008 after a (nine year) overhaul. In 2009 the cruiser will lead a fleet of foreign warships participating in a parade to mark the -60th anniversary of China's Navy.[2]

Russian Orthodox Sailors have a pretty violent reaction to gays, this should be interesting.

San Francisco....home port for the Rooskies, isn’t it?

That would be Fort Bragg, a little farther north on the coast.

The Ruskies were a little late in colonization and the Mexicans were already in SF.

Pity, I like Stroganoff more than tacos.

IIRC Feinstein, who gets things right occasionally, was p.o'd that the city rejected the USS Iowa.

There is a huge bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park that usually falls on the same weekend as the Blue Angels. You can see a lot of left-wing fundamentalists give the middle finger to the jets when they over the festival.

That'll show 'em!

"IIRC Feinstein, who gets things right occasionally, was p.o'd that the city rejected the USS Iowa."

Feinstein's all about the revenue and knew that the Iowa would have been the only reason some people ever even thought about visiting San Francisco.

Didn’t SF do something about not permitting the Blue Angels to perform there?

Sort of. A number of local Marxist whiners, some employed by the city, tried to ban the Angels. The city officially did not consider their request, but did require the Angels to perform above the Bay only, and not above the city, which is pretty much what the Navy did already, they only made turns above the city for photos with the high rises in the background, but the weenies wet their pants, so what ya gonna do?

They did refuse any support for the Iowa.

Three Russians ships visited San Diego while I was in the US Navy and stationed out there.

They docked at 32nd Street, and gave tours. I got some shoulder boards from an officer (Commander equivalent), and a hat.

They got a baseball hat, and a case of Bud light. I made out GREAT on that swap!

Not Fort Bragg, it was Fort Ross. The Russians had quite an outpost here on the west coast, just north of San Francisco, complete with shipbuilding and a port. Now is not the first time they will have sailed into San Francisco Bay.

In the early 1800s, They sailed into San Francisco Bay and the Spanish panicked, thinking they were under attack. The Spanish were ill-prepared and couldn't get their cannons ready in time. They met with the Russians and found out that the Russians were only interested in trade. See the Wikipedia description for Fort Ross.

"The colony included a port at Bodega Bay, which was called Port Rumyantsev, a sealing station on the Farallon Islands, 18 miles out to sea from San Francisco, and a number of small farming communities, called "ranchos" including Chernykh, near present day Graton, and Khlebnikov, a mile north of the present day town of Bodega in the Salmon Creek valley, and Rancho Kostromitinov[11] on the Russian River."

San Francisco rejected the USS Iowa, accepted the Russian navy. Amazing,,,,

No, it's perfectly predictable for that America-hating, Communism-loving city and area. Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein -- need I say more?
