Toxic Corexit dispersant chemicals remained secret as feds colluded with Big Business
Natural News ^

(NaturalNews) After weeks of silence on the issue, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finally decided to go public with the list of ingredients used to manufacture Corexit, the chemical dispersant used by BP in the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. There are two things about this announcement that deserve our attention: First, the ingredients that have been disclosed are extremely toxic, and second, why did the EPA protect the oil industry's "trade secrets" for so long by refusing to disclose these ingredients until now?

On the toxicity question, you could hardly find a more dangerous combination of poisons to dump into the Gulf of Mexico than what has been revealed in Corexit. The Corexit 9527 product has been designated a "chronic and acute health hazard" by the EPA. It is made with 2-butoxyethanol, a highly toxic chemical that has long been linked to the health problems of cleanup crews who worked on the Exxon Valdez spill.

Nice article. Lot's of whining, no details.

Written in the "Hyperbole is the Greatest thing ever style"

Similarly, virtually every perfume, cologne and fragrance product on the market is made with cancer-causing chemicals that their manufacturers refuse to disclose, claiming their formulas are "trade secrets."

The article failes to mention that one of these toxic chemicals is DHMO which is know to kill if even a tiny bit is inhaled.

The two chemicals listed as offending are: 2-butoxyethanol and dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate.

Is there a chemical engineer who could comment on these two substances?

"Lot's of whining, no details"

I expected that after seeing "Feds colluded with big business" in the title. Straight from the Pravda archives.

We would better to let the oil stay on the surface and evaporate.
It seems that BP is under pressure to make the oil go away (and not be visible); so they are forced to use these methods.

Apparently “someone” in the government doesn’t like photographs of the oil, nor does “he” like to be photographed next to the oil. Out of sight, out of mind.

A commonly used biodegradable solvent, and a detergent.
2-butoxyethanol is also called butyl cellosolve. It is irrititing to breathe, and should be used with adequate ventilation, respirators, etc, as it has some systemic toxicity. Maybe a carcingen. Found in Simple Green, Windex. DSS is basically a detergent, don’t swallow it or get it in your eyes.

My brother-in-law is, and was saying WEEKS ago that using corexit was going to be BP’s downfall. At the time I didn’t think that much about it, but now that oil is coming in Perdido Pass...

BP's response to EPA's dispersant directive

This is, without a doubt, the best "butt out" memo I've ever read. My favorite part is where they point out that the Feds have their toxicity spec backwards, and are asking for more toxic dispersants when they mean less toxic.

This memo offers an example of just how useless the Fed's politicized demands are. The government's frantically issuing directive after directive in its desperate effort to get 'out front' so that it can claim credit once success is achieved.

The document is also the fantasy "dear moron" memo that everybody in a technical job has ever wanted to write to the "managers" who insist on telling him how to do the job that he already knows how to do.

Yep; it's all about appearances.
When in fact; it might be much better to have that oil on the surface dissipating everyday

Yes, on the news last night a caller asked what the light fire like elements were to the point at the leak and was told it was a tube shooting dispersant into the flow as it exited the rupture.

Hmmm. I am a bit confused. Does this refer to what looked like fire coming out of the hole that was visible yesterday?

Also, if they are dispersing the oil at 5,000 ft, that could explain the alleged plumes of oil hanging at much lower depths that have been reported.

What a complete and total crock a’ baloney!

COREXIT itself mostly biodegrades after about a month, and in the meantime, it works a whole lot like common dish soap, which breaks oil down into tiny spheres, gets it off the surface of the water, down as far as 30 feet, and prevents it from clinging to things like fish, birds, people and beaches.

Yeah, COREXIT has its own level of toxicity, and its own lifespan once released, but that’s FAR less damaging than the crude oil and tar balls left untreated. Without a dispersant, the oil migrates to the surface where it is the greatest threat to sea birds, and has nothing to prevent it sticking to everything it touches.

Self-styled “conservatives” need to get a grip on these realities, and quit joining in with the eco-tard cabal screaming about this.

Oh, and as far as the line about “less toxic dispersants exist”? Where? In what quantities? Available to ship when? Deliverable to the point of need by what date?

Y’ever stop to think that just MAYBE the reason BP’s using a second best or third best dispersant in terms of overall toxicity is because less toxic products weren’t on hand, and couldn’t be delivered in time to do any good?

And I don’t see ANYONE out there really even making any attempt to provide answers to those salient questions; as far as I can see, nobody’s even looked into it as a possibility. The fact that BP has some vested interest in the manufacturer of COREXIT is just too delicious a factoid not to exploit. So, nevermind that other pertinent factors may exist that impact production, distribution, and availability of alternatives; don’t bring us up short with the possible existence of mitigating circumstances. Oh, no, we’ve got a story line to support our self-righteous indignation, and we’re off to join in the anti-BP screamfest.

Nothing we like more than a good anti-capitalist, envirotard screamfest; “conservative” or not.

Or so it seems.

Entirely damnable behavior.

Seems like those whining the loudest here are the ones with the least knowledge of the situation, too.

It made some of the bubbles look more golden/lighted as they shot out. I have not looked at the live pic today yesterday I could see the tube that was doing it.

First, the ingredients that have been disclosed are extremely toxic, and second, why did the EPA protect the oil industry's "trade secrets" for so long by refusing to disclose these ingredients until now?

THIS IS TOTAL BS!!!!!

These NUT CASES are now going after the NON-TOXIC (EPA SANCTIONED!!!) Dispersant trying to characterize it DANGEROUS. (It is about as dangerous as a hyperbolic cooling tower is for a nuclear plant ... although it became the "symbol" ... A SYMBOL OF IGNORANCE!)

If you look at the application technology, you are talking about PARTS PER BILLION!!! Geez folks, you could pour this stuff in your iced tea and probably not notice it! Right now, Dispersants are the ONLY GAME IN TOWN and to come out and say they are extremely toxic ... even after you can get an MSDS sheet and see its rating is A DAMNED LIE. You have to have an oleophilic component or it wouldn't work.

For the story on dispersants ... Go to The Patriot's Flag - Dispersants and the Piper

The retort is that these chemicals will KILL you, hell any chemical will kill you ... dihydrogen monoxide can kill some people in three minutes. Before you believe any of this NONSENSE ... please educate yourself on the technology. If this BS gets rolling with a gullible news media and a more gullible public, they'll pull the dispersants then we will have an ocean full of oil. This is fascinating technology, designed to "naturally" get rid of the oil. FIND OUT ABOUT IT but don't "push" this trash talk. People like OBAMA might hear you and either tax it or ban it.
