Heroin is now the number one over-dose killer in Oregon. Drug enforcement officers report that the nationwide campaign against methamphetamine and cocaine has worked so well that heroin is making a comeback. In 2009, 127 Oregonians died of heroin overdoses, killing more than meth and cocaine combined. Heroin killed 131 in 2000.
In 2009, drug deaths in Oregon dropped by 7 percent to 213 in 2009, according to figures provided by the state medical examiners office.
A recently new category, death from prescriptions drugs, has not be tallied yet for 2009.
