Larry Kudlow : Carly Fiorina, Woman for the Future
Real Clear Markets ^ | 06/10/2010 | Larry Kudlow

Revolution in California and political regime change come November has been a theme of mine for weeks. Tuesday night's big victories for Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina moved that agenda nicely down the field.

And let me add to it. Following the Tuesday primaries, the mainstream media began calling this the year of the woman, pointing not only to Fiorina and Whitman in California, but to Sharron Angle in Nevada, Nikki Haley in South Carolina, and Democrat Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas.

But we need a qualifier here. This is really going to be the year of the women from the past versus the women for the future.

In Arkansas, for example, Blanche Lincoln stands a good chance of losing her Senate seat to Republican House member John Boozman. Sen. Lincoln is a reliable Obama vote -- make that a reliable Obama/Harry Reid vote -- for issues like the stimulus package, Obamacare, cap-and-trade, and bank reform (even with the ruckus she made over forcing banks to spin off their derivative operations).

In California, the Carly Fiorina/Barbara Boxer matchup -- likely to be the marquee Senate race nationwide -- is a battle between a woman of the liberal-left Washington past and a woman who is a fiscally conservative outsider of the future. Recovering from cancer, and running in a tough primary, Fiorina demonstrated a steely inner strength that reminded one of Margaret Thatcher as she trounced her rivals by a wide margin.

Why Kudlow believes Fiorina is DA WOMAN :

The subject of this year's election will be the fiscal catastrophe coming out of Washington, D.C.: overspending, over-borrowing, over-deficit-making, overtaxing, over-regulating, and over-government-controlling. Obama's Washington is about welfare-state redistribution, the European model that has failed so miserably across the pond.

* Carly Fiorina's model is about entrepreneurship, growth, and opportunity, the basic American values of economic freedom that have been shunted aside in our nation's capital.

* Fiorina wants spending controls and limited government. She opposed the $860 billion stimulus as well as Obamacare.

* She is a smart, fiscally conservative woman who has campaigned on lower income-tax rates, a reduced capital-gains tax, and the elimination of the estate tax.

* she can be expected to push for a lower business-tax rate for large and small companies.

* The former HP CEO understands that only healthy businesses create new jobs, and that healthy businesses require investment.

* She believes in the old-fashioned, but tried-and-true, axiom that economic growth can only come from the private sector, and not from government spending.

* Ms. Fiorina is also pro-life, pro-traditional-marriage.

* Fiorina is pro-free-trade very tough on border security in the immigration debate.

* She is not running on so-called gender issues, but rather on fiscal-and-economic-growth issues, at a time when the economy is barely recovering from a long and painful downturn.

Given the damage she did to Lucent and HP, I’m not sure I’d put those on her resume’.

Maybe Carly is indeed da woman, but she’ll do better when she finally learns these two VERY important rules:

1. The mic is ALWAYS hot.
2. If you have doubts, refer to Rule #1.

“Given the damage she did to Lucent and HP, I’m not sure I’d put those on her resume’.”

Agreed. Maybe she’ll do better in politics where she doesn’t have the final word on things... but I doubt it.

And having read some of her tactics at HP, if she hasn’t changed, she is not a nice, (ethical), person.

Cokie Kudlow’s piece doesn’t contain one substantiated politically relevant fact about Fiorina other than that she is a woman. “Steely inner resolve.” He’s writing like Taylor Caldwell...

Fiorina’s main claim to fame as CEO of HP as I remember was absorbing COMPAQ into the HP umbrella.

Looking back, how good or bad was that decision ?

Kudlow gave several facts regarding Fiorina's policies in the article. Now, whether she'll ACT on what she says she'll do is another thing.

But think about it this way -- you're a Californian. Your only choice is a known marxist/socialist named Barbara Boxer (who has this inferiority complex that she insists on being called senator instead of Ma'am) vs. Carly Fiorina.

It isn't a tough choice for me.

The only good thing I can say about Ms. Fiorina is she is not that insufferable witch Barbara Boxer.

I'm not sure what you mean.

He listed a whole bunch of positions she takes. Aren't her positions "politically relevant"?

And let’s not forget the odious Arianna Huffnpuff running for Governor following the Davis recall.

Actually, she would have been no worse than Arnold.

yikes.

“Looking back, how good or bad was that decision?”

I think it was a great decision. HP couldn’t live in the past; they needed to thrust forward into the future. They needed Compaq to remain competitive. Today, HP is the largest PC manufacturer with revenues over $100 billion annually and is a market leader.

I know many of the things that Carly did were controversial, but I believe they were for the good of the company. Not to mention, my computer and my laptop are both HP products and they are simply excellent!

IMO, Carly Fiorina is an excellent candidate. She has been running her campaign with dignity and respect, unlike Chuck DeVore, who was arrogant and ran his campaign centered around bashing Carly and constantly preaching about how good he was. I should also mention that his supporters took a page out of the liberals’ playbook, posed as Carly supporters, and deliberately stirred up trouble on her Facebook page throughout the entire primary season.

Carly has been focusing on the issues that people care about, especially the water problem in the San Joaquin Valley, and that is helping her immensely. She will make a phenomenal Senator.

I urge all conservatives and the entire GOP to get behind Carly for Senate. We’ve got to unseat Boxer!!!!

Carly, although not perfect, would be a HUGH improvement over the Boxless wonder! Baby steps for Kommie Kalifornia.

The key word is “substantiated”. Based on her past, her “conservative positions” look suspiciously convenient - like the “conservative positions” Mitt Romney suddenly adopted when he wanted to move up the political ladder.

Right on. But we have quite a few simple minds that are really blind. They never learned that there are no perfect candidates but any improvement is our only chance and she is a vast improvement over Boxer. I suspect those that are voicing negative opinions and clueless.

Cokie Kudlow essentially did nothing more than repeat poll-tested bullet points from a campaign brochure.

The difficulty is that Californian conservatives have again bought the RINO “electability” argument. Fiorina will be better than Boxer, but not enough better to matter.

Kudlow’s comparing her to Thatcher is simply offensive. I wondr if he is still snorting.

Pretty much...if you bother at all to look at her past performances the outlook as senator is very grim. OTOH the koolaid drinkers will turn a blind eye and tell us she’s far better than her opponent, the best we could hope for under the circumstance. Oh really? She’s another Collins, Snowe, Graham or McCain. Her support will evaporate when its most needed and she’ll consistently undermine the best efforts of true conservatives to bring this nation back on track. At least Boxer is a known quantity and will do the wrong thing consistently. Then again we’re talking about the Kookyfornia electorate who’s decided to live in an alternate reality.
