San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, beating Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn on Tuesday.
After Newsom jumped out to a big lead and maintained it through the evening, Hahn called Newsom to concede, the mayor's campaign manager said.
Newsom will square off against the Republican nominee on Nov. 2, sitting Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado.
"This is going to be a tough campaign, make no mistake," Newsom told a throng of supporters. "We're running not just against the incumbent lieutenant governor. We're running against Meg Whitman's credit card."
Newsom, who ran a largely low-key campaign for the state's No. 2 job after dropping out of the governor's race in October, says he will push to halt state raids on county funds to balance Sacramento's books and look to expand programs embraced in San Francisco, like universal access to health care and services to the poor and homeless.
On Tuesday, he said job creation while converting to a green economy was his top focus.
Hahn, vying to be the first woman elected lieutenant governor, had made education, job training and creating jobs the cornerstones of her campaign, while taking swipes at Newsom as an ambitious political opportunist.
The mayor acknowledged in December that he didn't know what the lieutenant governor did.

Well, here is one Republican who will write in Aanestad instead of voting for Maldonado. I don’t care if that helps Newsom; I swore I would never vote for Maldonado after the many times he has stabbed republicans in the back.
Newsome is a worthless attention whore scumbag. And I only say that because I couldn’t fit “douche” in that sentence.
Can't get more "California" than that.
Fortunately, considering the two choices on offer, the answer is "Nothing".

That being said, I don’t believe D voters are nearly as far gone elsewhere as they are here. All of my relatives in the South are Democrats. Other than that, they are for the most part completely normal.
This weirdness must be unique to the Bay Area.
