Biden in push to stabilise volatile E. Africa

NAIROBI (AFP) – US Vice President Joe Biden met southern Sudan's leader in Nairobi Wednesday and also held talks on troubled Somalia after urging Kenya to reclaim its place as the region's force for peace.

On the second leg of his trip to Africa, Biden delivered a positive message to Kenya's leaders and promised substantial economic rewards if political reforms were implemented.

Biden later held talks with officials from southern Sudan, where a referendum on self-determination that could cause major upheaval in the region is scheduled for January.

Biden and US envoy to Sudan Scott Gration met with Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir as well as several other officials.

"Next January, the referendum on the future of southern Sudan envisioned by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement will occur, and it must be credible and it must be peaceful," Biden said in a keynote speech to university students.

"Sudan is hurtling toward a monumental decision that demands urgent international attention and preparation," he added.

Biden also took part in a meeting discussing Somalia, where moderate Islamist President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has been mustering support for an offensive against an Islamist insurgency.

Washington has repeatedly voiced concerns that Somalia, two thirds of which is controlled by the insurgents, was becoming a new haven for Al-Qaeda operatives.

Another official trip to Kenya huh?
How come there are so many trips from this admin to Kenya?
Is the rest of Africa unimportant? Kenya keeps popping up for some reason.

Only the English of the 18th & 19th century could even try, and they are not around anymore, so it's a write off, Joe, get real.

Even the Africans will tell you this.

Biden says new constitution would strengthen Kenya
AP

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100609/ap_on_re_af/af_kenya_biden

NAIROBI, Kenya – America’s vice president is playing up his ties to President Barack Obama in a country that considers the U.S. leader a native son.

Vice President Joe Biden, on a visit to Kenya, delivered a message Wednesday that Obama could have written — that Kenyans need to reach for “transformative change.”

Kenya goes to the polls in August to vote for a new constitution, and though Biden said the U.S. was not pushing Kenyans to vote for or against it, he did say the country has an opportunity to strengthen its democratic institutions.

Didn’t moochele say something about going to obama’s home country of Kenya?
It seems that this admin has some future plans regarding that country. One of the nuggets coming out of the blagovich trial was that rahm made a trip to kenya in December of 2008. What was that about?

Biden to stabilize Africa?

Did they write the title with a straight face?

"Behold His mighty hand!"

I know how he can help stabilize E. Africa. Don’t go there and don’t say anything. This job has to go to someone else.

“urging Kenya to reclaim its place as the region’s force for peace”

That sounds suspiciously like Balance-of-Power strategery. I thought this was the new era of Obamaism. You know, sittin’ down, rappin’, gettin’ down to the nitty gritty...something about hope.

After his golf and parties, of course.

And the ass-kicking.

Let's not forget the ass-kicking.

Soooo much ass-kicking.

What's Biden doing in Kenya? Nothing is happening there.

Is he slipping envelops of cash to some official or family member?
