Obama's Mayor Nagin Moment

John Lapoint of Packgen in Auburn, Maine, says he’s got plenty of floating oil containment boom and can make lots more on short notice. There’s just one problem: no one will buy it from him.

He’s already had a representative from BP visit his factory and inspect his product. The governor of Maine, John Baldacci, visited the facility and made a video plea to no one in particular to close the deal. Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins wrote a letter on May 21 to the secretary of the Interior, the administrator of NOAA, and the commandant of the Coast Guard to alert them to the existence of Packgen, their supply of boom, and their demonstrated capacity to make more. I have no idea if those are the correct persons and agencies to notify about the manufacturing capacity and the availability of boom. One wonders if the senators know.

While it is not easy to clean up an ocean oil spill, it is not a complicated procedure. In the open ocean, chemicals can be sprayed on slicks to try to disperse them. For the most part, oil floats, so it can sometimes be ignited and burned to lessen the amount that might reach a more sensitive area than the middle of an ocean. Out in open water, you can use booms (temporary floating barriers), but the wind and wave action makes it pretty difficult to place them and keep them there. When you get in closer to shore, where the oil is likely to do the most damage but the water is generally calmer...

"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

Government incompetence at its finest.

The solution is obvious:
1. Move to Chicago.
2. Get Mayor Shortshanks on the board of directors.

Why doesn’t Jindal just tell Barry and the Feds to go to Hell, and fix it without waiting for the diddling Barry and co?

money I think. La doesn't have enough to do it on there own. Still it does show Jindal to not be a real leader in this crisis. hopefully he takes the bull by the horns soon. I always liked Jindal but this last month I have found he not up for the task on many levels.

I would love to see him, in the media, tell Barry to take a hike and invoke States Rights.

Unless they can start printing their own money, that would be a useless thing to do. The last time they printed their own money things did not turn out too well.

Not only that but Louisiana has most of its resources already deployed in areas under its own jurisdiction. According to local leaders down there, Jindal gets high marks for for the action he has been taking in the absence of federal action. Where do his critics propose that he get the extra resources to cover the area under federal jurisdiction?

Because where it needs to go is in federal waters. Jindal is doing what he can where he has authority, on the coast.

This is zer0’s f’up.

Well, Obammy? BP’s nickel and diming this guy in Maine, waiting for him to sell excess inventory on the cheap...what are you gonna do about it, big shot? Kick some British ass, maybe?

Isn’t Maine a deep blue state?

The problem probably is that the manufacturer in Maine isn’t an Obama contributor. Obama is programmed to do business with those who helped him. The Chicago way.

Why isn’t our side publicizing this??? Nowhere is this to be found, and only a few posts on the Pajamas version, only 12 posts here. Good grief.

I don’t know. I guess the saying that the GOP couldn’t fight its way out of a wet paperbag is true. If the GOP at brains they would be blasting this all over the place. Maybe we got in on the ground floor of a scandal.
