Activists call for 'public outcry' over oil disaster (MoveOn calls for vigil)

Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- On the 50th day since the beginning of the massive oil disaster, advocacy group MoveOn says it will hold nationwide vigils Tuesday night to call for stepped-up efforts to stop the spill.

The group called for a "major public outcry" and created a section on its website for people to search for vigils in their area by typing in their ZIP codes.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration -- reacting to criticism that it has not been aggressive enough -- continued to work on turning that perception.

Obama delivered a blunt defense of his administration's response to the spill, telling NBC's "Today" show that he has held meetings with experts and has learned "whose ass to kick."

"I don't sit around talking to experts because this is a college seminar," the president said in an interview set to air Tuesday. "We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick."

The president also is endorsing plans to lift the cap on damages that oil companies must pay for a spill, currently set at $75 million.

On Tuesday, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called for a sweeping overhaul of the nation's corporate liability laws in the wake of the oil disaster, arguing that "no one's life should become an asterisk in somebody's cost-benefit analysis."

The brother of one of the 11 workers killed in the explosion on the offshore oil rig Deepwater Horizon blasted BP chief Tony Hayward on Tuesday.

Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Christopher Jones highlighted Hayward's recent remark that he wants his "life back."

"Mr. Hayward, I want my brother's life back," Jones said. "We will never get [his] life back."

As long as they do not drive or ride any type of conveyance that uses oil in any form for any reason, nor wear or use any things made from oil based products then I will give them some credit for at least standing for the very stupid ideas they embrace.

Maybe they can burn some itty-bitty oil lamps instead of candles this time.

Note sure what they’re against — is it a TOTAL BAN on ALL OIL DRILLING ? or is it a ban on offshore drilling ?

If it is the former, then yes, your challenge to them would be reasonable. What are they going to do ? Ride horses and bikes ?

If it is the later, the next questions are :

1) Are they going to protest the offshore drilling being done by other countries ? ( e.g. China, Russia, Norway, etc.) ?

2) Are they still going to demonstrate against DRILLING ON LAND ? if so, why ?

Has the Obama Regime even considered working on solutions instead of perceptions? Either tell BP to fix it and get out of the way, or designate an agency in charge and tell BP to get out of the way, but don't play the perceptions game and fuss over nuance. Environmental disasters don't care how you present your "road map" or what subtleties are included in the spin.

All of it is rather dumb. Let's face it, viable alternatives for petroleum powered cars are still 20 years off despite advances like the Tesla cars and such. We use some form of oil for most everything now so we got to have it.

Then there is my favorite new counter argument to the lefties who say “get the oil from overseas. I find that moist of them made the “imperialist” argument about American taking advantage of other nations in the war on terror. However they are doing the same imperialist bit themselves. Let the poor nations suffer with oil spills so we can drive our smart cars and Volvos, yeah, and you said what about Bush and the war?

Liberals, sheesh...

Hey I’m not mad or angry, it’s a disaster and they happen. Quit wasting energy on emotional responses and get with it to fixing the problem together. This blame game and finger pointing is a ruse to let the oil spew so they can take over our lives.

They’re planning vigils for tonight with the message: Stop drilling and look for alternative energy sources. If you live in Metro Detroit, they’re planning to stand on Warren Rd. in Westland right outside the Kohl’s at Westland Mall sometime this evening. It would be a good place to hold a tea party.

Stop drilling and look for alternative energy sources

Yes, stop drilling. And what are they going to power their cars, trucks and planes with in the meantime ?

WOW! This is a SUCH a great idea because up until now, there has been NO PUBLIC OUTCRY! </sarcasm>

What are these people smoking?

I know the gulf coast residents have thought of little else.
I don’t even live on the coast, yet I’ve been obsessed with this story. I for one spent and ungodly amount of time last Thursday and Friday watching BP cut risers and install a cap! I’ve learned more than I’ve ever wanted to know about drilling, BOPs, methane, and oil spill clean-up.

I’ve cried and I’ve prayed.
