I see this as an extremely bad, even awful portent.
To explain, there is now a Mesoamerican-throwback cult in Mexico, that while using some Catholic symbolism (and extremely condemned by the Catholic church), is a clear effort to revive the old Aztec and other tribal religions.
It is the “Santa Muerte” (Saint Death) cult.
It is estimated to have between 1-2 million semi-followers. It has even crossed the border into the US Mexican communities.
Santa Muerte is based on the gods Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, the lord and lady of Mictlan, the realm of the dead. In order for the deceased to be accepted into Mictlan, offerings to the lord and lady were necessary. Many of the offerings given then are the same as those offered to Santa Muerte today.
The problem is that with a lot of these deities, human sacrifice, often by decapitation or removal of the heart, as well as ritual cannibalism, were the “orthodox” practices to appease these gods.
Likely, as the situation of chaos in Mexico deepens, it will result in more and more gruesome examples of butchery. If the cult develops a charismatic leader, it may gather its own inertia, killing for the sake of killing, a full fledged death cult.
India had one such cult, called the Thuggee, and it went on an armed robbery, butchery spree that lasted until the British wiped them out twice. There are still remnants of it in India.
The problem with death cults is that they have no discretion. They will kill anyone: men, women, children, any race.
