Here's my take, as a former professional piano player and singer who can perform at least 50 of Elton's songs.

I despise the guy's brain-dead leftist politics. I don't care that he's gay. Today, at 62, the famous high tenor range is long gone.

But give the man his due. At his creative peak, from around 1970-73, Elton John wrote some of the most interesting and complex pop music ever played on the radio. And as a performer, virtually nobody could touch him. People will still be listening to songs like Levon, Tiny Dancer and Your Song long after we've all shuffled off this mortal coil.
