There was an overwhelming response to the Austin Police Department's first ever "Guns for Groceries" event.
Hundreds of people turned out Saturday to exchange unwanted guns for vouchers to buy groceries.
"The line is very shocking to me. We had people in the parking lot at 7:30 a.m. waiting to turn their guns in, and the event did not start until 9 a.m," APD's Sgt. Ely Reyes said.
Department officials ran out of grocery vouchers after about two and a half hours.
APD asked the community to turn in any gun, no questions asked. In exchange, people got anywhere from $10 to $200 in grocery store gift cards.
"People like me who don't use them, haven

If someone will pay more for something than it is worth to you, you sell it to them. I believe studies have shown these gun buy backs dont necessarily lead to the public having fewer guns. So dont call rational people “suckers.’
This may sound silly but I can see a “Cars for Groceries” program in America’s future.
I'm saying the wrong people are giving up their guns-- the people who should have their guns taken away, the people who are the problem, aren't the ones in this line. These poor people giving away their guns will wish they had them back when one of the thugs comes beating on their door.
Very slick way to word it. Good job!
These programs are really disturbing and also disgusting to me. They make an assumption that arms are inherently evil which is contrary to the express intent of the Constitution.
Those supporting it deserve to have their other rights taken from them tho I would never do it to them.
And where did the police department get the $30,000 to bribe the harmless people with food coupons?
Next they’ll be offering us chocolate bars and nylon hose for our sharp objects
What do you bet that if some of these guns turn out to be worth big bucks as collectibles, that somehow they don’t wind up in the crusher?
You don’t know who is in line. A criminal with a rusty old gun may well be in line to sell it and buy an upgrade.
I guess I'm dense, but I don't get it. Please explain.
I’d trade a gun for groceries so my kids could eat.
Seriously, folks — there are a lot of good people out of work, even in Texas.
I didn't see anything exciting there -- but wouldn't even junky guns likely fetch more than "$10 to $200" on Gunbroker.com?
Wow....I guess not many people have seen “The Gods are Crazy”
To Obama be hangin' wit Ludacris, yo:
so it's likely in the near future, after a few more wise latinas and such, people will be sharpening rocks with flint to make arrowheads and they'll be wishing they kept some of those "useless" guns.
Ludicrous and Ludacris. Awesome.
Sounds like a good way to add to my collection.
If anyone brings me a gun in working order I will give you $10 to $200 (+10% since I am in competition).
It will be in the form of cash, grocery vouchers or random things from my garage.
Thank you for taking guns out of the hands of idiots and placing them in the hands of someone who knows how to appreciate them.
What would you for a klondike bar?
