Not gunna happen. Same dire predictions after gulf war one. Predictions were for 10 years to cap the wells, they were done in 18 mo.

That was under a republican. All he ad to worry about was missing engineering data on every well, deliberately set fires, and mines, booby traps and terrorist attacks.

The PEMEX accident, in 1979, streamed oil into the Gulf of Mexico for almost 10 months. I’d be curious to know how the area around it was affected, ecologically.

I suspect the catastrophic effects of this are being overblown. We're already seeing some of these Gulf coast state governors complaining that the media is making people believe the beaches are all covered with oil, when in fact few if any are.

Some level of crude oil leaks into the oceans constantly and naturally, and the ocean can handle it. Obviously a large amount in a confined space can overwhelm natures ability to deal with it for awhile, but the Gulf will survive just fine.

Problem with drilling relief wells is that it’s a crapshoot. Paraphrasing Dr Michio Kaku from a radio interview on the Opie and Anthony show on XM earlier this week: “You’re drilling 1 to 2 miles, trying to hit a target the size of a dinner plate.”

Two things can happen

1. The relief well is just aimed at the reservoir to take pressure off the runaway well so it can be capped. Two will do this even better. You take oil and gas from these two new holes as fast as possible.
2. What also can be done is to insert nuke down the relief well. Though It's much better to nuke it midway down say 7000 ft than at 18,000 ft down where relief well is trying to meet the gusher well

The closest example in the Gulf of Mexico was the Ixtoc I blowout, at 160 feet under water, which spilled oil for 10 months. Estimates are that it spilled between 10,000 to 30,000 barrels a day for the life of the spill (somehow the Deepwater accident, at 5,000 to 25,000 barrels a day, has exceeded the Ixtoc spill already, according to Drive By Media.) It took two relief wells before the main well could be safely capped and sealed.

The event began in 1979, which makes it a pretty darn close example for today, taking in technological advances, to compare the accidents. BP quickly started two relief wells, tried the top kill and the junk shots the Mexicans did, and has used siphoning to try to reduce the amount of oil being spilled, which wasn't done in 1979. Timeframe wise, BP is half a year ahead of the Ixtoc's timeline at this point.

BP crews have begun to drill two relief wells in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) to stem the flow from the MC252 well.

BP has relief well contingency plans in place to allow the company to regain control of a well. These plans are now being called into action in the GoM.

A drilling rig drills a relief well or second well to intersect the original, flowing well as deeply as possible. A specialized heavy liquid is then pumped into the flowing well to bring it under control. This liquid is denser than oil and so exerts pressure (known as hydrostatic pressure) to stem the flow of oil. Once the flow is stopped, the well can be returned to a safe condition.
