Nashville flood victims agonize: Rebuild or leave?
Locally,we have a big development splurge financed by Ohio victims of Indiana casinos ;much money is being spent on a fleet of dump trucks moving the hilltops into the former river bottomlands.
Instead of corn, there is a whole nother kind of "shucking" going on.
Flooding in Nashville is very very rare. It isn’t a flood plain. We just had a huge amount of rain in a very short time which overflowed the riverbanks.
Just for fun, ask the person sitting beside you the name of the FEMA director. Odds are about 1 in 50 the person will have the answer. After all we heard about Katrina and FEMA ... it is never mentioned in reference to Nashville. Those people are hurting badly, and there is not even media coverage of their plight. Another media failure?
Dont quite understand my analysis?
My analysis, simplified: If the town flooded, it’ll flood again. If the town floods often enough, stop rebuilding. See “New Orleans” and “Hurricane Katrina” for further analysis.
Absolutely no comparison. Nashvill is not on the coast nor do we have big lakes. As a matter of fact it is a mountainous region. We have rivers that overflowed their banks after a once in a generation rainfall. It can happen anywhere.
I would never build in a flood zone. Move to higher ground.
Once in a generation rainfall... It can happen anywhere, and probably will, once in a generation.
What? There was a flood in Nashville? When did that happen? Didn’t see anything about it on the news. Where’s FEMA? Where’s Obama?

Damage was to 52 COUNTIES not just Nashville. Tipton Co had 40,000 acres still under flood water just 2 weeks ago.
The Navy Base in Millington (Shelby Co W. TN) was flooded when the Big Creek Levy gave way. 200 military housing units were damaged, along with many office buildings. This base houses ALL NAVY records. 300+ mobile homes in 1 mobile home park were under 7-8 feet of water. RR tracks were damaged, still not totally repaired. There was 22 inches of rain. Millington had 1 lone FEMA bus to take claims. NO HELP. The Navy base called in Serv Pro after the initial clean up by the Navy men and women.

Which means the homeowers did not have flood insurance. This means they have to come up with the cash to make repairs themselves. This means they have to be wealthy people and many are not.
What our ancestors would do...what is best for their family’s survival and recovery.
Thats true. Most people did not have flood insurance since it rarely ever floods in Nashville. It didn't only flood homes close to the rivers, it flooded the downtown area, too. It was bad. The media didn't cover it much but it was a disaster.
I have moved to higher ground. But now what to do with my flooded out property....uh...let’s see....I had flood insurance....had homeowners......they won’t pay what I need to repair let alone replace or rebuild......hmmm let’s see.....give it and my $40,000 in equity I HAD and live with a foreclosure on my credit which btw will keep me from ever obtaining another mortgage to the bank..... I guess.....do I have a choice? Any suggestions?
Why do you need to see our plight? Just ask me I’ll tell ya then I will ask you for money to help me.
