Also to further frustrate the shade tree mechanic some of the nuts and bolts are also metric on American made vehicles

My sister bought the Ford Mustang II V-6, 2.8L engine.

Honest to God, this engine was SAE on one side and Metric on the other. I kid you not.

The dealer just shrugged when we asked how this could have happened and to this day I have no idea how it could have been manufactured that way.

I grew up in California—I think I know what you are referring to—a white paddle with a black top. So it’s kind of a secret code! I never realized they were mileposts.

Our mile posts here in Missouri tell you the distance to the state line or the end of interstate. Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee work the same. The exits are numbered to the nearest mile. Makes it very simple to know how far you are from your destination.
