Nobel prize winning Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu wonders aloud why oil is still leaking from the cap when it is lowered into place. This was the plan. The cap needed to be settled into place with little oil flow stoppage to get the seals seated before attempting to slowly close the vents and force the oil flow up the pipe. Guess he forgot to read the bill. His Nobel prize was for physics, not engineering or reading.

Even a logical thinking physicist would understand what is going on. Chu is a political hack with a degree in science. The last few years he’s been focused on Global Warming - not using his brain.

The vents are in place to prevent ice from forming. Capping the break is bound to have oil seeping through the vents. Yet this chu chu brain who’s Obama’s brightest doesn’t see that? Good grief.

Besides all that, Chu obviously has not been paying close attention to this thing. BP has made it abundantly clear that there will still be leakage from this work-around.

I’d suggest someone get in his face and recite Chris Rock’s line in Rush Hour: “Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?”

A combination of no practical experience and liberal brainwashing. A person like this is a deadbeat employee in the real world.

I’ll be the first to say it.I’ve been watching closely( since I’m laid up in bed with 2 crushed heels from a fall). This cap is not working. As a fabricator it looks pretty lame to me. I don’t know who is doing the engineering here but IMHO there needs to be a change.

The top of the cut above the flange is very rough, and there is no way to clamp the fixture to the flange, so how can a proper seal be attained at 13,000psi.

I don’t understand why they didn’t just cut the bolts and remove the top half of the flange.

Chu’s a scientist, not an engineer. Engineers think in terms of solutions, and how effective they are, while scientists think in idealized, mathematical abstractions. There are exceptions, of course, but as a pair of stereotypes, I have see these hold up pretty well.

Of course and here is the weird part.

He should have had it explained to him before they started. He should have had an expert educate him. He’s made the first mistake every PhD grad makes. He thinks he’s smarter than everyone in the room. He might be smarter than anyone in the room but he doesn’t know what everyone in the room knows. He assumes he understands when he doesn’t.
