Ankara Threatens To Sever Israel Ties
WSJ ^ | 6/5/2010 | JAY SOLOMON

WASHINGTON—Turkey moved closer to severing its relations with Israel, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly apologize for his government's high-seas military action against a pro-Palestinian flotilla this week in order to avert a formal diplomatic rupture.

Senior Israeli officials responded Friday that their government would never apologize for an act of "self defense" and acknowledged that Israel could be on the verge of losing its closest military and economic ally in the Middle East.

Such a development, these officials said, would raise new strategic and diplomatic challenges for Israel if Ankara reorients itself away from its historically pro-Israel and pro-Western stance.

"[We] hope that it won't happen. But if it does, it will be very problematic for the region and Europe as well," said a senior Israeli defense official in Washington. "It will mark another step of Turkey moving eastward."

Turkey's ambassador to the U.S., Namik Tan, laid out three demands for Israel to meet in order to maintain its relationship with Ankara.

In addition to the public apology from Mr. Netanyahu, Mr. Tan said the Israeli government must consent to an international investigation into the commando operation, in which nine Turkish activists died on a Turkish-flagged ship, the Mavi Marmara. The Turkish envoy, a seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to Israel, also said Israel must take concrete steps to ease its military blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Apologize for what - defending themselves? Could the Israelis storm into Turkey if they wanted to without being intercepted?

RE: "The late Winston Spencer Churchill warned against it years ago, to no avail."

What did Churchill say about Turkey vis-à-vis NATO? Turkey was admitted to NATO in 1952 and had at that time outstanding forces in Korea fighting communists alongside U.S. forces, et al. The Turkey troops were very much appreciated -- I do not think that that is questioned.

Churchill led England's W.W. I Navy against Ottoman Turkey. As colonial secretary (1920s) he had esteem for Kemal, wanted a reconciled Turkey against the Bolsheviks and wanted help for England managing Her affairs in the Middle East (former Ottoman territory). Churchill was against breaking up the country of Turkey following W.W.I.

What changed his mind about Turkey following the founding of the modern democratic Republic of Turkey in 1923?

I cannot find what happened. Thanks.

_______________

Please forgive the confusion.

I referred to Winston Spencer Churchill, who was the GRANDSON of the famous Prime Minister, Winston Churchill or WW II era. The Grandfather WAS indeed a supporter of Turkey’s entrance into NATO in 1952.

A correction on my part: I misspoke — Churchill (the grandson, who died in April) warned Europe in 2005 NOT to allow Turkey to join the European Union/European Community, and said NATO should rethink their membership in NATO due to their radicalization, which he saw as a problem years ago.

Forgive my lack of clarity. Churchill the grandfather DID want and knew the West needed a united and secular Turkey to counterbalance the Soviet Block. Churchill the Grandson recognized that in the present era, the most virulent and relentless enemy of the west is not a Godless socioeconomic and political ideology, but a “God” infused socio-political religious system.

Even the majority of the Turkish press is taking Israel’s side in this matter.

Where did you find this out?

read about it today.
The PM of Turkey was soo pissed at the press for not acting as his defacto mouthpiece over this , he actually busted out, “We know your names, we know your history” in a speech about it today and the press in Turkey is heavily censored to begin with.
And lets face it, the hypocrisy is soo thick you can cut it with a knife. Fight kurds = counterterrorism. Fighting Hamas = murder.
Turkey’s opinion on the matter is worthless.
And I hope the military coup’s these Saudi stooge islamderthals any day now. They are cruzing for it as they’ve been craping all over the Turkish constitution.

If Turkey severs ties with Israel, Turkey can kiss its NATO membership away. This is also means that the United States needs to pull its B-61 nuclear weapons from Incirlik Air Base.

Thank you for the well-informed and concise response -- I should have noted "Spencer" which would have pointed me to the grandson.

BTW, I have a great deal of respect for the Turks having worked with them and lived in Ankara.

IMO, their Islamist AKP no more speaks for the majority of Turks than the 1960s Marxist-Alinsky campus/street rabble and their ideological-issue Rat Party speaks for the majority of Americans.

Thanks again -- and BTW your description "'God' infused socio-political religious system" made this effort worth it.
