I lived in the Florida panhandle (Mexico Beach) back in the early 80’s.
It was routine to get out the bottle of 409 and paper towels
to get the tar off your feet after walking on the beach,
and that was 30 years ago.

The Gulf has always had a lot of natural seeps. There are articles about it that we found right after this whole thing started.

Don’t let little things like truth get in the way of a crisis.

The environmental harm of a few tarballs will be ... nil.

I vacationed in Mexico Beach a few years ago. Was all the property in the hands of a couple of realtors back in the 80s? I got a strange mixed feeling from the place; it was good that there were no Wal-Marts or McDonalds, yet creepy that Motel Hell was the only destination.

We did the same thing when we stayed at our beach house west of Panama City in the late 70s and early 80s. Was remains from the spill in the early 70s if I remember.

It was common to have tar on your feet.

If anyone thinks that the FL panhandle beaches are simply experiencing the ordinary tar balls that have always been present in FL, they just aren’t paying attention. I have relatives who have lived in Pensacola for decades, and they’re telling me that what is washing up now isn’t ordinary in any sense of the word. What I wonder about is the motivation of those who are poo-poo’ing the reports as much ado about nothing. Ignorance is one thing, but deliberate disregard of the facts and mischaracterization of the situation has another agenda and this troubles me.
