LOS ANGELES -- Cadmium has been discovered in the painted design on "Shrek"-themed drinking glasses being sold nationwide at McDonald's, forcing the burger giant to recall 12 million of the cheap U.S.-made collectibles while dramatically expanding contamination concerns about the toxic metal beyond imported children's jewelry.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early Friday, warned consumers to immediately stop

Not sure where this should be posted, but this could affect many FReepers with young children or grandchildren. Consumers are warned to immediately stop using these glasses.

Thank you.

Or, just don’t lick the outside of the glass.

Although the article says a ‘very small amount’ of cadmium can come to the surface of the glass, McDonald’s is asking consumers to immediately stop using the glasses.

Will post information next week on their website as to how to obtain a refund. Glasses sold for approximately $2. as part of the ‘Shrek Forever After’ movie promotion.

We bought 4 for our grandson and am glad he’s not used them yet.

Thought I’d share in case any other FReepers owned some.

McDonald’s spokesmen assured the public that they may continue to eat the toxic food, however.

You probably breathe in minute quantities of various toxins every day. “Cowboy up”...

Oh, and always ask for the “under 3” toy with your happy meal. These are actually good quality toys.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but where I’m from we drink stuff from the inside (non-painted) part of the glass, and manage not to lick the outside.

You do realize how the olfactory process works, don’t you?

Particles of the material that you’re smelling physically go up your nose to the olfactory nerve which processes it into an electrical signal interpreted by your brain.

Yes, parts of that fart you’re smelling are going into your nose. :)

A lot of younger children will lick the glass without realizing it when they drink though. And who knows if it can be absorbed through wet skin - like wet fingers holding the glass.

The younger the child, the less it takes to make them sick. Not worth the risk if you ask me, but to each their own.

That does make sense. But you know how kids get the messy hands when eating and then holding that glass. And then they lick the fingers, so maybe that is what they are refering to. I know use the napkins and washcloths. Chasing little kids with a washcloth is great exercise.
