Critics called it racist. Supporters called it satire. But opinions aside, a local weekly newspapers photo spread last month comparing President Obama and the first lady to Sanford and Son spawned a proposal to sanction the Smithtown Messenger, reigniting the debate over the sanctity of legal noticesand putting Suffolk Countys race relations back in the national spotlight in the process.
The controversial photo array of presidential couples, published in the papers April 29 issue, started chronologically with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and ended with Barack and Michelle Obama, showing pictures before and after their time in the White House. The punch line was the after shot of the Obamas: an image of actors Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford and LaWanda Page as his sister-in-law, Aunt Esther. Esther has a scowl on her face and her fists raised to Sanford, a junk dealer, as their friction was a running joke in the 1970s sitcom.

Comparing Barry and Michelle to black people? It’s an outrage!!
What if someone joked about Obamah being a Black Chicago Gang-Banger with a gun in his waist-band, pulling it out on BP Executives?
What’s the deal with the vandalism of Reagan’s face on the left side??
Hahaha . . . the only thing wrong with that montage is that Sanford and Son should have been the before AND after picture.
Oh, whine whine whine.
BTW, I didn’t realize Sanford & Son was racist...back in those days it was very popular, although I didn’t care for it.
>>BTW, I didnt realize Sanford & Son was racist..<<
Exactly. They compared a black presidential family to a sitcom about a black family.
If someone compared the Bushes to the Ozzie and Harriet show, would that be racist?
These race baiters are losing it.
A morphed picture of this would be awesome!
Pretty accurate, I'd say. Michelle is always scowling.
I didn’t think the show was very funny. I don’t like watching folks make fools of themselves.
To the terminally PC, it’s only respectful if you compare BO & MO to a white couple. Hey, wait a minute . . . . .
After 8 solid years of smirkingchimpbushhitler jokes, slander and treasonous behavior by the mainstream media concerning Bush ... I could not possibly care less.
Movin’ on up! . . . . Got a piece of the pie!!
hehehe
