The White House has shown disdain for what officials call the "theatrics" the punditocracy is demanding of the president -- more emoting, more visits to the Gulf, fewer administration spokespeople.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told ABC News: "If the president thought that yelling at the top of his lungs would solve this crisis, he would stand on top of the White House and do that. But he believes this crisis will be solved by plugging the hole and responding to the damage done, not by method acting."
And what of the myriad ceremonial events President Obama has hosted or participated in this month, ones Jon Stewart mocked him for earlier this week on The Daily Show?
Officials say they're sensitive to the awkward dynamic -- no leader wants to be seen as fiddling while Rome burns -- which is why President Obama, sometimes perhaps a bit clumsily, tries to invoke the oil spill at these events, as he did at the ceremony for Paul McCartney last night.
But even if there weren't an oil spill, officials say, the U.S. is fighting two wars and in the middle of an economic crisis. There's always something more important to be focused on instead of, say, Jewish American Heritage Month or a celebration of the Duke University Blue Devils men's basketball team. The unprecedented move would be to cancel all the ceremonial events, officials say.

Obama is a CHILD////not even a MAN-CHILD...just a CHILD who is in WAAAAAAAY over his head.
0bama yuks it up at lavish White House parties with entertainment celebrities and doesn’t give a dern about the people of the afflicted Gulf region.
It’s all about him being worshiped by the shallow.
He’s not smart.
This is painful to watch. Affirmative action doofus is flailing away and doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know.
And the job is not going to get easier.
Brought to us by a major political party and their media.
Zer0 to visit Golf again? Who knew?
Those unknown unknowns will get ya. Just ask Cheney.
A face like hemorrhoids.
“But he believes this crisis will be solved by plugging the hole”
I left my deepwater drilling license in the crackerjack box, but hasn’t it been pretty well established that BP is afraid to completely plug the hole, and put the well under pressure...because the casing was never completely cemented, and the rock around it is surely eroded now? This is the third or fourth time the admin has used ‘plug the hole’ terminology, If they are supposed to be in charge, they had better get their act together - and not give people the impression that this thing can be stopped in the next few days, by simply ‘plugging a hole’.
My license is in a similar location, but why don’t they drill a short well quite close to the leaker to either intercept same or just be there to take the pressure off the current well head? It’d be faster.
The day after the fireboats sank the rig they could have flexclamped the leaking parts and diverted the flow up new temporary risers.
How to solve the problem of the Gulf Oil Spill= solution plug it with BHO. There we get rid of two problems and oil leak and political weakling. Problems solved
On purpose?
Two such relief wells are being drilled as you type.
Some way to capture the current flow, though tried in various ways, need to be persued in multiple paths. Besides a close well to the leaker could be continued to perform the nuke kill if appropriate later.
Call in the AmeriCorps! They’ll get the job done. Volunteers on the federal payroll. The prez is an incompetent in chief.
You have it. The answer is to drill side relief wells to siphon off pressure. Which may be precisely why Obambi has disallowed any more drilling permits.... this is intentional destruction of native soil mineral rights. So we can all ride bikes to drive our beanie hat windmills with our solar panel shirts on pulling deep cycle batteries in a cart. Cuba is the model, don’t forget.
Pull a half dozen fireboats up to any vessel and put that many tons of water on it and guess what happens.
Foam, CO2, Nitrogen, Steam Thrusting, Dry ice encapsulation , and/or a combination of more modern fire suppression technology would be more appropriate to save such a beautiful vessel as the poor old Deepwater Horizon.
The Horizon seems to have been a valuable asset that would have been worth saving after all personnel had left. Flaring off/burning everything coming up seems preferable to months of leakage.
Quite the lesson to be learned.
Let's hope it gets through those thick upper lip noggins.
